Government Launches 15 Inclusive Technology Incubators Nationwide
The Department of Science and Technology (DST) has initiated a groundbreaking initiative by establishing 15 Inclusive Technology Business Incubators (i-TBI) in various universities and higher educational institutions across India. This strategic move aims to promote innovation and entrepreneurship beyond the larger metropolitan areas, ensuring that aspiring entrepreneurs in all corners of the country have access to vital resources.
Union Minister of State, Dr. Jitendra Singh, made the announcement during a visit to the Delhi Technological University (DTU), where he assessed the performance and impact of the DST-supported i-TBI as part of the National Initiative for Developing and Harnessing Innovations (NIDHI) program. The visit served to highlight the incubator’s role in transforming academic concepts into viable market solutions, with a keen focus on inclusivity and the empowerment of women entrepreneurs.
Evaluating Progress at DTU’s i-TBI
During his visit, Dr. Singh toured the i-TBI facility at DTU, evaluating how effectively it is facilitating innovation, research, and startup development. He engaged with faculty members, student innovators, and startup founders, praising the university for successfully utilizing DST’s support to foster a lively startup ecosystem within its campus. The Minister expressed his approval that the DTU i-TBI has already nurtured 15 startups, highlighting the entrepreneurial potential thriving within the university’s environment.
On this occasion, three startups received Startup Ignition Grants of ₹5 lakh each under the DST-NIDHI framework. These grants are designed to assist innovators in advancing their projects from concept to prototype and ultimately into early commercialization. According to Dr. Singh, such financial support acts as a catalyst, encouraging young entrepreneurs to take risks and innovate.
Shaping the Future Through Innovation
Dr. Jitendra Singh emphasized the significant transformation within the scientific and technological landscape of India under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He noted that over the past decade, the nation has shifted from merely consuming technology to becoming a creator of technology. This shift is backed by structured support systems that cover the entire innovation lifecycle—from research infrastructure to industry collaboration.
The Minister highlighted the necessity for universities to evolve into centers of innovation and entrepreneurship, instead of solely focusing on traditional teaching methods. He urged academic institutions to actively collaborate with industry, attract private investment, and diversify their funding sources. Utilizing government initiatives like FIST, PURSE, and NIDHI can significantly enhance their research and innovation capabilities.
Bridging the Innovation Gap Across India
Addressing the broader national innovation landscape, the Minister reinforced the government’s efforts to create frameworks that ensure innovation reaches smaller towns and aspirational districts. He observed that merit-based selection and transparent outreach have fostered confidence among young innovators, resulting in a democratization of scientific capability and aspiration across the nation.
The DST-supported i-TBI at DTU operates under the DTU Innovation and Incubation Foundation, focusing on supporting knowledge-based startups, especially those led by women. It offers extensive support, from ideation and prototyping to product development and market access, bolstered by modern infrastructure and mentoring resources.
