Government Enhances e-Shram for Unorganised Workers
The Ministry of Labour and Employment has made significant strides to empower unorganised workers in India through the e-Shram portal. Since its launch on August 26, 2021, the portal has registered an impressive 31.48 crore unorganised workers, providing them with a Universal Account Number (UAN) based on self-declaration. In line with the vision set forth in the Budget Announcement for 2024-25, the Ministry introduced the e-Shram “One-Stop-Solution” on October 21, 2024, aimed at consolidating access to various social security schemes.
This new integration enables registered unorganised workers to easily access benefits from multiple social security and welfare programs through a single platform. As of now, fourteen schemes from various Central Ministries and Departments are already mapped with e-Shram. Among the programs available to these workers are the Pradhan Mantri Street Vendors Atmanirbhar Nidhi (PMSVANidhi), Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY), and the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS), along with others, facilitating insurance, housing, and skill development opportunities.
Furthermore, e-Shram has established connections with National Career Service (NCS) to offer job opportunities and the Skill India Digital Hub (SIDH) for skill development. It also integrates with the Pradhan Mantri Shram Yogi Maan-dhan (PM-SYM) for pension schemes, bolstering support for the unorganised workforce.
In an effort to increase registrations and ensure that workers, including migrant laborers, construction workers, and agricultural laborers, have easier access to the benefits, the Government has implemented a comprehensive outreach strategy. This includes self-registration through the web portal and mobile application, as well as assisted registration at Common Service Centres (CSCs) and State Sewa Kendras (SSKs). The Ministry is conducting targeted awareness campaigns through registration drives and community outreach programs, while also utilizing social media to share informative content.
Additionally, the launch of the e-Shram mobile application on February 24, 2025, has made it even simpler for unorganised workers to access real-time information about welfare schemes. This initiative significantly enhances the convenience and reach of the services provided under the e-Shram framework.
The Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Sushri Shobha Karandlaje, shared this information in response to a question in Lok Sabha, underscoring the government’s commitment to supporting unorganised workers through dedicated initiatives.
