Government Commits to Sustainable Mining for India’s Future
Gandhi Nagar, Gujarat: The Rashtriya Khanij Chintan Shivir 2026 concluded with a firm commitment from both the Centre and State governments to enhance sustainable mining practices and secure India’s critical mineral requirements. The second day of the conference highlighted key strategies aimed at strengthening India’s mining sector, concentrating on the National Critical Mineral Mission, sustainable mining methods, and long-term mineral security initiatives.
During the sessions, Shri Vivek Kumar Bajpai, Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Mines, provided a detailed overview of the National Critical Mineral Mission framework. He elaborated on plans for identifying critical minerals, exploration strategies, auctioning procedures, and initiatives designed to bolster domestic mining and processing capabilities. Furthermore, he emphasized the promotion of value addition and the establishment of resilient supply chains through strategic collaborations with industry and research institutions.
Shri Pankaj Kulshrestha, Controller General of the Indian Bureau of Mines, also contributed by discussing innovative recycling techniques for critical minerals. His presentation underscored the potential for using advanced technologies to extract valuable resources from waste dumps and tailings, advocating for environmentally responsible and circular mining practices.
During the event, Shri Piyush Goyal, Secretary of the Ministry of Mines, stressed the necessity of expediting mining operations to boost the sector’s contributions to national development. He called for streamlined processes to enhance accountability and announced the ministry’s initiatives to accelerate mining-related activities, aligning with the nation’s developmental goals.
Punjab’s Mining Minister, Shri Barinder Kumar Goyal, showcased the advancements and future potential of the state’s mining sector, urging the adoption of modern technologies, sustainable practices, and effective policy frameworks.
Union Minister for Coal and Mines, Shri G. Kishan Reddy, reinforced the foundation of the mining sector for inclusive and sustainable development. He highlighted the prudent use of District Mineral Foundation funds to support mining-affected communities, the importance of thorough mine closure planning, and timely mineral block auctions. He reiterated the collaborative role of States in implementing mining sector reforms and assured ongoing support from the Government of India for responsible mining practices, aligning with the broader objectives of Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Viksit Bharat by 2047.
The two-day conference brought together prominent leaders and officials, including the Chief Minister of Gujarat, Shri Bhupendra Patel, Union Ministers from various ministries, and Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar, Shri Vijay Kumar Sinha. The participation of mining ministers and senior officials from over eight states underscored a strong commitment to cooperative federalism in advancing reforms within the mining sector.
