Government Boosts Khadi Sector with New Financial Initiatives
The Government of India is intensifying its support for Khadi institutions by consistently monitoring key performance metrics such as production, sales, and employment. This oversight is conducted by the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC), which operates under the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises. As part of its commitment to uplift the Khadi sector, the government provides various financial assistance programs to Khadi institutions and artisans.
Key Financial Assistance Programs
One of the significant initiatives is the Modified Market Development Assistance (MMDA), which funds the modernization and computerization of sales outlets. This program helps enhance value addition through the adoption of cutting-edge technologies in the fabric processing chain.
Another essential scheme is the Interest Subsidy Eligibility Certificate (ISEC), which offers eligible Khadi institutions credit at a reduced interest rate of 4% per annum for both Capital Investment and Working Capital. This support is determined based on the institutions’ production levels and funding needs.
The government has also introduced the Workshed Scheme for Khadi Artisans, aimed at improving the workspaces where artisans spin and weave. This program provides not just better working environments, but also storage facilities for raw materials and finished products.
Revamping Weak Institutions
For struggling Khadi institutions, the government provides need-based infrastructural assistance to help them regain stability and become self-sufficient. Meanwhile, marketing support, including renovations of sales outlets, introduction of new designs, and the development of ready-to-use products, is essential to boost the visibility of Khadi products.
Improving Market Linkages
To strengthen market linkages and promote the Khadi brand, KVIC has launched its own e-commerce portal, www.khadiindia.gov.in, allowing consumers nationwide to purchase Khadi products. The Commission also organizes various exhibitions, from national to district levels, enhancing exposure for Khadi artisans.
In addition, KVIC encourages participation in major trade fairs, both domestically and internationally, such as the Indian International Trade Fair. Special sales events are also held during the Khadi Mahotsav to further promote products.
Brand Promotion Initiatives
KVIC sponsors numerous marketing programs, including those at prestigious educational institutions like IIT-Madras and IIM-Tiruchirappalli, showcasing the uniqueness of Khadi products through various media platforms. The brand ‘Khadi India’ is actively promoted through sponsorship of events organized by independent entities, helping to enhance brand awareness and market reach.
