Government Boosts Farmer Incomes with Key Procurement Decisions
In a notable initiative to support the agricultural sector, the Union Government has approved crucial procurement measures aimed at ensuring fair prices for farmers. Union Minister for Agriculture, Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan, has sanctioned the procurement of 9,023 metric tonnes of sunflower at the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for the Rabi 2026 season in Karnataka. This decision, along with an increase in the gram procurement limit in Maharashtra, represents a substantial investment with a combined MSP support exceeding ₹4,886.46 crore.
Sunflower Procurement in Karnataka
Shri Chouhan has authorized the Karnataka government’s proposal for sunflower procurement under the Price Support Scheme (PSS). The total MSP value of this acquisition surpasses ₹69.66 crore, providing vital reassurance to sunflower farmers. This initiative aims to alleviate the common issue of farmers being compelled to sell their crops at unfavorable prices due to market fluctuations.
Increased Gram Procurement in Maharashtra
In a parallel move, the government has approved an increase in the maximum procurement limit of gram in Maharashtra for the Rabi 2025-26 season to 8,19,882 metric tonnes, with a total MSP value exceeding ₹4,816.80 crore. Additionally, the procurement period has been extended by an extra 30 days, allowing farmers more time to sell their produce. This extension will assist many farmers who previously missed the deadline, enabling them to take full advantage of the MSP benefits.

These strategic decisions by the central government are geared towards shielding farmers from distress sales and ensuring they receive just compensation for their produce. By broadening procurement operations and extending sale windows, the government is working to foster a more stable and predictable environment for agricultural producers.
