Government Approves ₹9,072 Crore for Major Railway Projects

In a significant step towards enhancing railway infrastructure, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, led by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has given the green light to three major projects from the Ministry of Railways, with a total expenditure estimated at ₹9,072 crore. These projects, which will bolster rail connectivity and operational efficiency, include the Gondia – Jabalpur Doubling, the Punarakh – Kiul 3rd and 4th line, and the Gamharia – Chandil 3rd and 4th line.
The initiatives will cover eight districts across the states of Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, and Jharkhand, and will lengthen the existing Indian Railways network by approximately 307 kilometers. This development is expected to enhance accessibility for about 5,407 villages, benefiting around 98 lakh residents in the regions.
Enhancing Connectivity and Efficiency
These multi-tracking projects aim to significantly augment the capacity and reliability of the Indian Railways. By alleviating congestion and streamlining operations, the enhancements are anticipated to improve the overall mobility of passengers and freight services alike. Aligned with Prime Minister Modi’s vision of a self-reliant India, the projects are designed to foster comprehensive development in the area, thereby creating new employment and self-employment opportunities.
Integrated Planning for Growth
The projects are part of the PM-Gati Shakti National Master Plan, which focuses on improving multi-modal connectivity and logistics efficiency through collaborative planning and input from various stakeholders. These initiatives are crucial for ensuring seamless transport of people, goods, and services throughout the region.
Boosting Tourism and Reducing Environmental Impact
In addition to improving connectivity for everyday commuters, the upgrades will enhance rail links to prominent tourist destinations such as the Kachnar Shiv Temple in Jabalpur, Kanha National Park, and Dhuandhar Waterfall, among others. The capacity enhancements are vital for transporting essential commodities, including coal, steel, iron ore, food grains, and fertilizers, leading to an expected increase in freight traffic of approximately 52 million tonnes per annum.
Moreover, the eco-friendly nature of railway transport supports environmental goals by drastically reducing oil imports by 6 crore liters. This shift also contributes to lowering carbon dioxide emissions by 30 crore kilograms, equating to the effect of planting one crore trees. With these developments, the Indian Railways is not only focusing on operational improvements but also on sustainable transportation solutions for the future.
