Government Aims to Streamline Processes to Enhance Foreign Direct Investment

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal announced on Thursday that the Indian government will prioritize streamlining processes and expediting clearances to enhance foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows. He emphasized that the Indian economy has shown robust growth in the first quarter, with data set to be released next week.

Focus on Value Chain and KYC

Goyal stated that the government is receptive to industry suggestions to improve processes and policies that facilitate faster FDI flows. He highlighted the need for more efficient Know Your Customer (KYC) norms and mutual recognition agreements with foreign regulators to simplify approvals. The minister noted that the investment model should encompass not only large corporations but also the entire value chain, promoting local production of key inputs like titanium dioxide, which currently sees imports worth $1 billion.

He further mentioned the government’s intention to expand production beyond semiconductors to include gases, specialty chemicals, and components, aiming to deepen self-reliance and create more jobs.

No Decision on CPTPP, Focus on FTAs

Goyal promoted India’s Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) as a means for investors to access international markets while also catering to domestic needs. He revealed that negotiations for additional FTAs with countries such as Canada, Chile, Israel, and the South African Customs Union are ongoing. However, he clarified that no decision has been made regarding joining the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), stating that the government has not yet fully considered this option.

Strong Growth in Q1

Goyal reported positive feedback from industry sources, indicating a 15% increase in exports during the first quarter. He expressed confidence that the quarter would yield strong results, reinforcing India’s position as a resilient and rapidly growing economy despite global uncertainties. The minister also pointed out that while FTAs facilitate access to international markets, there remains significant potential within the domestic economy.

He mentioned ongoing efforts to normalize trade with West Asia and to establish new routes on the eastern front, including oil and gas pipelines and train lines.

Japan’s Demand

The minister noted Japan’s request for the restoration of benefits for a chemical used in the semiconductor value chain. The government plans to ensure that these benefits, previously withdrawn due to misuse, are properly utilized moving forward.
