Government Aims to Optimize Gas Supply Amid Gulf War Disruptions to LNG Flow
With nearly 40% of India’s liquefied natural gas (LNG) supply affected by ongoing conflicts in West Asia, the Indian government is formulating an “optimisation plan” for key industries, particularly the fertiliser sector. Discussions within the petroleum ministry suggest that adjustments could be implemented as early as Tuesday, potentially leading to reduced gas supplies for fertiliser production. However, officials assure that sufficient supply will be maintained to ensure optimal operation levels for fertiliser units, especially during the agricultural lean season.
Government’s Response to LNG Supply Disruption
The Indian government is actively addressing the challenges posed by the disruption in LNG supplies due to geopolitical tensions in West Asia. With a significant portion of the country’s LNG flow impacted, officials are prioritising the fertiliser sector to ensure that agricultural needs are met. A source familiar with the discussions indicated that while some reduction in gas supply to fertiliser units may occur, the government is committed to providing enough resources for these units to function efficiently. This approach aims to mitigate any potential negative effects on agricultural production during the critical sowing season.
Current Fertiliser Stock and Industry Preparedness
Despite concerns over reduced gas availability, the fertiliser industry is currently well-prepared. The Fertiliser Association of India (FAI) reported that India is entering a lean agricultural season, with kharif sowing set to begin in June. During this period, fertiliser consumption typically decreases, allowing manufacturers to replenish their inventories and conduct necessary maintenance on production facilities. As of now, the stock of fertiliser has risen significantly, with estimates showing a 36.5% increase to 17.7 million tonnes compared to the previous year. This ample supply provides a buffer against potential disruptions in production.
Alternative LNG Sources and Logistics Challenges
In light of the current situation, India is exploring alternative sources for LNG to compensate for the shortfall from West Asia. Approximately 60% of the country’s LNG supply comes from regions outside West Asia, with ongoing efforts to secure additional supplies from countries like Australia and Canada. However, logistical challenges remain, particularly in arranging tankers for transportation and ensuring that new suppliers have the capacity to liquefy gas before shipment. These factors will play a crucial role in maintaining a stable supply of LNG for various sectors, including fertiliser production.
Long-term Supply Strategies and Fertiliser Reserves
The Indian government has taken proactive measures to bolster its fertiliser reserves, which are currently at a historic high. The fertilisers department reported that imports have significantly increased, with 9.8 million tonnes brought in by the end of February, and an additional 1.7 million tonnes scheduled for import over the next three months. This strategic approach aims to prevent any domestic shortages that could arise from international supply chain disruptions. With a diversified supply strategy for phosphatic fertilisers, India is better positioned to mitigate risks associated with reliance on specific regions, ensuring that agricultural needs are met despite external challenges.
