Government Acts to Enhance Mobile Connectivity on National Highways
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is taking decisive action to tackle significant mobile network connectivity challenges that have been identified along various sections of the National Highway network. In a proactive move, NHAI has requested assistance from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) to ensure that telecom service providers (TSPs) improve coverage, especially in remote and newly developed areas. This endeavor is crucial, not only for public safety but also for the strategic importance of the National Highways.
Following a thorough assessment, NHAI has pinpointed 424 specific locations along approximately 1,750 kilometers of National Highways that are severely lacking in mobile connectivity. This data has been formally submitted to the DoT and TRAI, emphasizing the urgent need for action.
Impact on Safety and Public Services
The absence of reliable mobile network coverage in rural and isolated segments of the National Highways raises serious concerns. It hinders the operation of highways, disrupts emergency services, and obstructs the delivery of technology-driven public services. NHAI is emphasizing that robust mobile connectivity is essential for the improvement of these vital infrastructure corridors.
In addition to addressing connectivity gaps, NHAI is also urging TRAI to mandate that telecom operators send proactive SMS alerts to drivers nearing high-risk areas. This initiative targets accident-prone zones, especially those impacted by stray cattle, ensuring that road users receive cautionary messages before arriving at hazardous locations. A detailed list of these accident-prone sections has been shared with TRAI, highlighting areas that require immediate attention.
