Gorakhpur’s Vishal Nishad: A Journey from Financial Struggles to IPL Stardom

When the IPL-2026 mini-auction took place in Abu Dhabi, Vishal Nishad, a right-arm leg-break bowler, was watching from Kanpur, where he was attending the Uttar Pradesh team’s camp for the Vijay Hazare Trophy. The auction held personal significance for him, as a single selection could transform his life. After a tense first round where he went unsold, the Punjab Kings ultimately picked him in the third round for Rs 30 lakh, marking a pivotal moment in his cricketing journey.

Early Beginnings and Challenges

Vishal Nishad’s cricketing journey began in the humble surroundings of Jangal Ayodhya Prasad village in Gorakhpur. Initially, he played cricket with a tennis ball, but a friend, Vineet Pandey, encouraged him to switch to a leather ball for serious training. Despite his passion, Nishad faced financial barriers that made it difficult to pursue his dream. He hesitated to invest in proper equipment, but Pandey’s persistence led him to the Sanskriti Cricket Academy in Gorakhpur. Coach Kalyan Singh, upon learning about Nishad’s financial struggles, generously offered him three years of training without charge. Nishad practiced diligently, often borrowing equipment from fellow players, showcasing his determination to succeed.

Rising Through the Ranks

In 2024, Nishad faced his first significant challenge when he needed to attend trials for the UP T20 League. Lacking funds for travel, he borrowed Rs 2000 from a friend to make the trip to Noida. His efforts paid off as he took three wickets in his first practice match, securing a spot in the league. During his debut season with the Gorakhpur Lions, he excelled, claiming seven wickets in four matches, followed by six wickets in five matches the next season. His consistent performance caught the attention of scouts, paving the way for his entry into the IPL.

The IPL Dream Realized

Nishad’s journey to the IPL was not a matter of chance. He actively sought trials, including one with the Punjab Kings in Lucknow. His unique bowling style, often referred to as ‘mystery bowling,’ began to attract the attention of franchise talent scouts. Ankit Rajpoot, a scout for the Punjab Kings, recognized his potential early on while watching him play for the Gorakhpur Lions. The moment he was picked in the auction, it was a significant achievement for Nishad and his family, who had never imagined that a member of their household would reach such heights in cricket.

The auction result holds immense significance for Nishad and his family. His father, a carpenter and mason, works on daily wages, and the prospect of playing in the IPL seemed like a distant dream. However, with this new opportunity, Nishad is determined to carve out his identity in the cricketing world. He acknowledges that while the spotlight may still be far away, this is just the beginning of his journey. With hard work and dedication, he aims to make a lasting impact in the sport he loves.
