New Feature Enhances User Control
The latest development from Google introduces a feature that enables users to tailor their Discover feed more effectively. This initiative, dubbed “Tailor your feed,” allows individuals to articulate their content preferences through written instructions. Users can now add new topics, remove unwanted ones, or refine existing interests. Additionally, they can specify content from particular publishers, allowing for a more personalized experience. For instance, a user might request more recipes or choose to exclude news from certain sources. This feature not only enhances user engagement but also aims to reflect broader themes or moods in the content displayed.
The feature was first highlighted by a Reddit user who shared screenshots of the option on the r/Pixel_Phones subreddit. This early experiment is designed to provide users with a more hands-on approach to content management, moving away from the reliance on hidden settings and taps. Google emphasizes that this is an optional feature, allowing users to decide whether they want to participate in the experiment.
How the Feature Operates
Currently, Google Discover offers basic controls for users to manage their content. Users can tap a three-dot menu on a story to request less content on a specific topic or stop updates from certain sources. While these existing tools will remain available, the new experiment aims to provide a more nuanced level of control. Users can express their preferences in their own words, which Google’s automated systems will interpret and apply to the Discover feed.
This approach is intended to make content curation more intuitive and user-friendly. By allowing users to articulate their desires directly, Google hopes to create a more engaging and relevant experience. Joining the Search Labs Initiative
To access the “Tailor your feed” feature, users must join Google’s Search Labs. Signing up is straightforward; users can open the Google app and tap the laboratory icon located at the top left of the screen. From there, they can easily enable the new option by scrolling through the list of available experiments and selecting it with a single tap.
