Google Play to Alert Users of Excessive Battery Usage by Apps
Google is set to introduce a new alert system for Android users that will notify them when apps excessively drain battery power while running in the background. This initiative aims to enhance user awareness and control over app behavior, ultimately improving device performance. With this update, users will be better equipped to identify and manage applications that negatively impact their phone’s battery life.
New Monitoring Feature for Battery Usage
The upcoming update on Google Play will feature a sophisticated tracking system designed to monitor how apps utilize system resources. This new capability will highlight applications that frequently prevent devices from entering a low-power state. Google emphasizes that this change will empower users by providing them with greater visibility into how apps affect their battery life. Historically, Android users have faced challenges in identifying which applications silently consume battery power. Many apps utilize “wake locks,” a system permission that keeps the phone’s processor active for background tasks such as downloads or music playback. Unfortunately, some poorly optimized apps exploit this feature, continuing to run even when the screen is off.
Red Warning Labels for Excessive Battery Drain
To address this issue, Google has developed a new metric called “excessive partial wake locks.” This feature measures the duration an app keeps the CPU active and flags those that exceed a specified threshold. Apps that maintain non-exempt wake locks for over two hours within a 24-hour period and exhibit this behavior in at least five percent of user sessions over a 28-day timeframe will be classified as excessive. Once identified, these applications will receive a warning on their Play Store listings regarding their high background activity. Starting March 1, 2026, users will see a red warning message stating, “This app may use more battery than expected due to high background activity.” This update represents a significant shift for Android users, as they will receive battery warnings before installing an app.
Impact on Developers and User Experience
In addition to the warnings, Google plans to reduce the visibility of apps that drain battery life across key areas of the Play Store, including recommendations and trending sections. This change will compel developers to enhance their apps’ battery efficiency or risk decreased discoverability. For users, the new system promises to minimize overnight battery losses and provide better control over power consumption. They will have the option to restrict background activity or uninstall apps that consistently drain energy.
Collaboration with Samsung for Accurate Detection
This new system has been developed in partnership with Samsung, utilizing real-world data from Galaxy and Pixel devices to ensure precise detection of battery-draining apps. This collaboration enables Google to distinguish between legitimate background tasks, such as syncing messages or updating widgets, and those that unnecessarily consume battery power. For users, this means a more efficient experience with fewer unexpected battery losses, while developers are encouraged to create power-efficient applications that meet user expectations.
