Google Messages Introduces @Mentions for RCS Group Chats

Google Messages is currently testing a new feature that allows users to tag specific individuals in RCS group chats using the “@” symbol. This functionality, reminiscent of similar features in WhatsApp, aims to enhance communication in larger group conversations. Users will be able to notify someone directly, even if they have muted the chat, making it easier to capture attention amidst multiple discussions.

New Tagging Feature in Testing Phase

The anticipated tagging feature in Google Messages is designed to streamline interactions within group chats. Users who have access to the beta version report that typing the “@” symbol prompts a list of participants, allowing them to select whom they wish to tag. This feature is particularly useful in busy group discussions, where messages can easily get lost. By tagging someone, users can ensure that their message stands out, making it more likely to be seen and responded to.

Customizable Display Names

When tagging someone, Google Messages offers flexibility in how their name appears. Users can choose to display only a first name or customize it further, such as tagging “Ashish Singh Digit” simply as @Ashish. This customization helps maintain clarity in conversations while still ensuring that the tagged individual receives a notification. For contacts that are not saved in the user’s phone, the app displays the tag as “@” followed by the phone number, ensuring that everyone in the group can still identify the person being mentioned.

Gradual Rollout to Beta Users

Currently, the tagging feature is being rolled out to a select group of beta users, and not all users have access to it yet. Reports from some users indicate that they have not yet seen the feature in their app. Google appears to be implementing this feature gradually, likely to gather feedback and make necessary adjustments before a wider release. As the testing phase continues, it is expected that more users will gain access to the feature in the near future.

Enhanced Communication Experience

The introduction of the @mention feature in Google Messages represents a significant step towards improving user experience in group chats. By allowing users to tag specific individuals, Google aims to facilitate better communication and engagement in larger conversations. As this feature progresses through its testing phase, it holds the potential to become a valuable tool for users looking to enhance their messaging experience.
