Global Leaders Unite for First Raisina Science Diplomacy Initiative
The inaugural Raisina Science Diplomacy Initiative (SDI) was launched on March 5, 2026, at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, marking a significant step in the intersection of science and international relations. Jointly organized by the Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India and the Observer Research Foundation, this initiative is part of the prestigious Raisina Dialogue.
Gathering around 80 influential figures, including scientists, diplomats, and policy makers, the event set the stage for rich discussions on the role of science diplomacy in addressing contemporary challenges posed by disruptive technologies and the quest for strategic autonomy. The closed-door format encouraged open sharing of ideas, as attendees from across the globe discussed evolving governance frameworks necessary for navigating the complexities of international science cooperation.
Leadership and Vision
The event was chaired by Prof. Ajay Kumar Sood, the Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India, with co-chairs including Sir Peter Gluckman, President of the International Science Council; Prof. Marilyne Andersen, Director General of the Geneva Science and Diplomacy Anticipator (GESDA); and Dr. Vijay Chauthaiwale, in charge of the Foreign Affairs Department of the Bharatiya Janata Party. Their opening remarks highlighted the crucial role of science and technology in national development, security, and economic competitiveness, reiterating that science diplomacy must continuously adapt to emerging global challenges.
Roundtable Discussions
The initiative featured two key roundtables. The first, titled “Science Diplomacy in the Era of Strategic Autonomy,” was led by Dr. Parvinder Maini. Participants discussed how to harmonize national interests with scientific collaboration, emphasizing the importance of trust and cooperation within scientific systems. There was also a consensus on the need for robust risk assessment and a transparent research environment.
The second roundtable, “Science Diplomacy and Governance of Disruptive Technologies,” was chaired by Prof. Marilyne Andersen. Here, discussions revolved around creating effective governance mechanisms for frontier technologies, stressing the significance of aligning innovations with ethical and societal values. The dialogue called for globally coordinated strategies to leverage technological advancements while addressing inherent risks.
