Global Buddhist Summit Delegates Honor Buddha’s Relics in India
The Global Buddhist Summit reached a significant milestone as approximately 250 monks and delegates from around the world gathered at the Qila Rai Pithora Cultural Complex to honor the Holy relics of the Buddha. The event, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 3, 2026, provided an opportunity for spiritual reflection and appreciation of India’s ancient heritage.
Participants from various countries spent over two hours immersing themselves in an exquisite exhibition that detailed the historical significance of the Piprawah relics. The presentation included narratives about India’s dedicated efforts to reclaim these sacred relics, originally taken in 1898. Delegates were particularly moved by the country’s commitment to preserving its cultural legacy and the repatriation of these important artifacts.

Many attendees felt fortunate to connect with the relics of the Shakyamuni Buddha, allowing for moments of introspection and reverence. A senior sangha member expressed, “We are extremely fortunate to be given this rare opportunity to be blessed by the relics of the Shakyamuni and see the rich collection.” Others remarked on the unexpected spiritual aspect of the Summit, which successfully combined the philosophical with the sacred.
A Day of Celebration
Another highlight of the Global Buddhist Summit was the experiences of around 60 monks who attended India’s Republic Day parade on January 26. Their presence amidst the display of military might and national pride underscored a powerful juxtaposition of peace and strength. Observers noted that the monks represented compassion, embodying Prime Minister Modi’s belief that addressing global challenges requires a path grounded in Dhamma.
A senior monk described the parade as a “thrilling experience.” After the event, three Vietnamese nuns expressed their desire to wait and greet the Prime Minister as he walked by. Allowed to remain, they later shared their joy at encountering him up close, capturing the moment with photographs to share their experience back home.

These remarkable occasions during the Global Buddhist Summit showcased the dual nature of India’s identity—deeply rooted in spiritual wisdom and rich cultural history while demonstrating its democratic strength and sovereignty to the world.
