Gemini Surpasses ChatGPT on App Store with 45% Download Surge from Nano Banana AI Model

Gemini’s mobile app has experienced remarkable growth following the launch of its Nano Banana image editor model in August. Users have praised the app for its ability to simplify complex edits and produce realistic images. Recent data from app intelligence firm Appfigures reveals that Gemini has surged to the top of global app store charts, achieving a 45% increase in downloads month-over-month in September alone, with 12.6 million downloads already recorded this month.

Impressive Download Numbers

Gemini’s success is evident in its download statistics. In August, the app garnered 8.7 million downloads, but that figure has already risen significantly in September. With half of the month still remaining, the app has reached a total of 12.6 million downloads. This surge marks a notable increase in user engagement and interest in the app’s features. Prior to this month, Gemini had previously peaked at No. 3 on the U.S. App Store back in January 2025. However, the release of the Nano Banana model has propelled it to new heights, achieving the No. 2 position on September 8 and ultimately claiming the top spot on September 12.

Dominance in App Store Rankings

Gemini’s rise in the app store rankings has been impressive. After overtaking OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which now sits at No. 2, Gemini has maintained its position as the leading app on the U.S. App Store. Furthermore, the app has also made significant strides globally, ranking among the top five iPhone apps in 108 countries. On Google Play, Gemini climbed from No. 26 to No. 2 in the U.S. as of September 8, although ChatGPT continues to hold the top position on that platform. This growth reflects a broader trend of mainstream users embracing Gemini’s innovative image editing capabilities.

Financial Growth and Consumer Spending

The surge in downloads has translated into increased consumer spending on the app. In 2023, Gemini generated $6.3 million on iOS devices, with $1.6 million of that revenue coming in August alone, following the launch of the Nano Banana model. This figure represents a staggering 1,291% increase from January’s revenue of $115,000. As of now, Gemini has already earned $792,000 in September, indicating that it is on track to at least match or exceed August’s revenue. The app has achieved a total of 103.7 million downloads this year and 185.4 million downloads since its launch on Android in February 2024 and subsequent expansion to iOS later that year.

Engagement and User Interaction

The engagement levels with Gemini’s app have also been noteworthy. Following the release of the Nano Banana model, Google Gemini and Google Labs VP Josh Woodward reported that the app attracted 23 million first-time users. These users have shared over 500 million images, showcasing the app’s capabilities and the enthusiasm of its user base. This level of interaction not only highlights the app’s popularity but also its potential for continued growth as more users discover its features. As Gemini continues to evolve, it remains to be seen how it will maintain its momentum in the competitive landscape of mobile applications.
