GCCs Outpacing IT Firms in Hiring
The landscape of India’s technology sector is undergoing a significant transformation. Global Capability Centres (GCCs) are emerging as key players, surpassing traditional IT firms in hiring and innovation. This shift highlights a growing trend where GCCs are not just operational hubs but are becoming strategic drivers for their parent organizations. The Rise of Global Capability Centres
Global Capability Centres have experienced remarkable growth in recent years. These centres are designed to leverage global talent and drive innovation in technology and processes. Unlike traditional IT service providers, GCCs focus on strategic initiatives that align with their parent companies’ long-term goals. They are expected to surpass IT services in hiring for the second consecutive year, indicating a shift in the employment landscape.
Currently, GCCs employ approximately 1.9 million people, and this number is projected to grow significantly. According to a recent report by Nasscom and Zinnov, the number of GCCs in India is expected to reach 2,200 by 2030, potentially employing between 2.5 to 2.8 million individuals. This growth is driven by the increasing demand for skilled professionals in areas such as artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and cybersecurity. In the fiscal year 2022-23, GCCs added 280,000 employees, showcasing their ability to attract talent and contribute to the overall growth of the IT sector.
Traditional IT Firms Struggling with Growth
In contrast to the booming GCCs, traditional IT firms are facing challenges in workforce expansion. The top five Indian IT companies reported a modest increase of only 13,000 new hires in the first half of the 2024-25 fiscal year. This is a stark contrast to the previous year, which saw a significant reduction of nearly 44,000 employees during the same period. Companies like Infosys, Cognizant, Wipro, and HCL have all experienced headcount declines, reflecting a broader trend of decoupling revenue from headcount.
This deceleration in hiring is attributed to several factors, including enhanced automation processes and a conservative growth outlook. Many IT firms are grappling with single-digit growth, prompting them to focus on productivity gains rather than expanding their workforce. For instance, Infosys’s headcount dropped to 310,000 in the September quarter of the current financial year, down from 340,000 in the same quarter of 2022. Similarly, Cognizant and Wipro reported headcount reductions of nearly 9,000 and 29,000, respectively. This trend indicates a shift in the industry, where companies are prioritizing efficiency over sheer numbers.
The Future of Employment in the IT Sector
As GCCs continue to gain momentum, the future of employment in the IT sector appears to be shifting. Industry experts emphasize the need for traditional IT firms to adapt to the changing landscape. Ramkumar Ramamoorthy, a partner at Catalincs, highlights the importance of reinvesting in business to maximize market share. He argues that companies must embrace structural shifts in technology and business to remain competitive. This includes investing in areas like cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and cloud computing.
Moreover, the dissatisfaction among IT services employees is becoming a pressing concern. Phil Fersht, CEO of HfS Research, notes that many employees feel under-challenged and are ready to leave for more stimulating opportunities. In contrast, GCCs are attracting talent by offering competitive salaries and challenging roles that involve cutting-edge technologies. This shift not only enhances GCC capabilities but also elevates the entire Indian IT industry.
