Gautam Gambhir Reflects on His Missteps Regarding Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s Relationship

Indian men’s cricket team head coach Gautam Gambhir has acknowledged that he may not have managed his relationships with senior players Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma as effectively as he could have during his tenure. This admission comes in light of Kohli and Rohit’s recent retirements from Test cricket, which followed India’s disappointing performance in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Speaking at the RevSportz Conclave in Kolkata, Gambhir addressed the ongoing speculation regarding his rapport with the two players, hinting at possible missteps in his approach.

Gambhir Reflects on His Tenure

During his time as head coach, which began in July 2024, Gambhir has faced scrutiny over India’s Test cricket results and his interactions with Kohli and Rohit. While he did not delve into specifics about his relationship with the players, he expressed that mistakes are a natural part of being human. He emphasized that his decisions were made with good intentions, stating, “Wrong decision with right intent is acceptable, but wrong decision with wrong intent is not in that dressing room.” This perspective highlights his commitment to maintaining integrity within the team environment.

Achievements Amidst Challenges

Despite the challenges, Gambhir’s coaching tenure has seen significant successes. Under his leadership, India clinched the ICC Champions Trophy in 2025 and the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in 2026. Additionally, the team secured the Asia Cup title last year. These accomplishments stand in contrast to the criticisms he has faced regarding the team’s performance in Test cricket and the dynamics with senior players. The duality of success and scrutiny illustrates the complexities of coaching at the highest level.

Communication and Honesty in Leadership

Gambhir also addressed concerns about potential divisions between him and the players, particularly in light of rumors suggesting he wanted Kohli and Rohit out of the team. He reaffirmed his commitment to honest communication, stating, “Till the time I am doing everything with honesty, till the time I can be honest with everyone in that dressing room, I think I am doing a fair job with my position.” This commitment to transparency is crucial for fostering a positive team atmosphere, especially in the face of external pressures and media speculation. Gambhir’s focus remains on doing his job to the best of his ability while navigating the complexities of team dynamics.
