Garment Exporters Remain Optimistic Amid US Tariff Changes

Shishir Kapoor, a prominent ethnic womenswear exporter from Lucknow, has stated that his business remains unaffected by the 50% tariffs imposed on Indian exports to the United States. Kapoor, who leads MLK Exports, noted that his clientele consists of upper and mid-tier buyers who can absorb the increased costs without requiring discounts. However, many exporters are feeling the pinch from the tariffs and the unpredictability of U.S. trade policies. As a result, some are looking to new markets in Europe and the UK to offset potential losses.

Challenges for Indian Exporters

While Kapoor’s business is thriving, many exporters are struggling with the ramifications of the steep tariffs. The uncertainty surrounding U.S. trade policies, particularly under President Donald Trump, has led to a decline in orders for some. Jyoti Apparels’ managing director, HKL Magu, highlighted that while demand for plus-sized women’s garments remains strong, the future is uncertain as American buyers are requesting discounts of 10-15%. This has prompted Magu to shift focus towards European and British markets, where he hopes to find new opportunities.

In the face of these challenges, smaller exporters are adapting by insisting on upfront payments from buyers. For instance, HW Apparels, based in Tirupur, has shifted its strategy to target larger stores, as smaller buyers have become hesitant to place large orders. The company has seen a significant reduction in shipments, now sending only two to three containers a month compared to four to five previously. This shift reflects a broader trend among Indian exporters as they navigate the complexities of the current trade environment.

Emerging Opportunities in New Markets

Despite the difficulties posed by tariffs, some Indian exporters are finding new avenues for growth. Companies like Kolkata-based Kariwala are expanding their production capacity to manufacture sustainable bags, capitalizing on new orders from European retailers. Kariwala’s president, Anand Sureka, expressed optimism about the potential benefits of upcoming trade agreements that could eliminate tariffs on their products, allowing them to compete more effectively against countries like Bangladesh.

Additionally, exporters are noticing a shift in interest from markets beyond the U.S. Vinod Rathore, who oversees exports at Lux Industries, mentioned that the changing landscape in Bangladesh has opened doors for Indian products in countries like Russia and Australia. As the global textile market evolves, Indian exporters remain hopeful that a resolution to the tariff situation will emerge, allowing them to re-engage with American buyers and stabilize their businesses.
