Funding Overview for Agricultural Research in India

The Department of Agricultural Research and Education (DARE) plays a crucial role in advancing agricultural practices in India. Over the financial years from 2014 to 2023, DARE has seen significant changes in its budget allocations. This article provides a detailed overview of the funds allocated to DARE, including Budget Estimates (BE), Revised Estimates (RE), and Actual Expenditure. Understanding these figures is essential for grasping the financial commitment towards agricultural research and education in the country.

Budget Allocations from 2014 to 2023

The financial allocations for DARE have shown a progressive increase over the years. In the fiscal year 2014-15, the budget estimate was โ‚น6,144.39 crore. This amount has steadily increased, reaching โ‚น9,504.00 crore in the 2023-24 budget estimate. The actual expenditure has also reflected this upward trend, with the actual spending in 2022-23 recorded at โ‚น8,578.17 crore.

However, there were notable exceptions during the pandemic years of 2019-20 and 2020-21. The Revised Estimates for these years showed a slight reduction in funding. For instance, the RE for 2019-20 was โ‚น7,846.17 crore, down from the initial budget estimate of โ‚น8,078.76 crore. Similarly, the RE for 2020-21 was โ‚น7,762.38 crore, compared to the BE of โ‚น8,362.58 crore. These reductions were largely attributed to the financial constraints imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic, which affected many sectors, including agriculture.

Strategic Utilization of Resources

DARE has made significant strides in optimizing the use of its allocated resources. The department has focused on prioritizing research activities to ensure maximum impact despite the challenges posed by limited budgets. By realigning its processes, DARE has successfully met the demands of its Research and Development activities. This strategic approach has allowed the department to continue its work in agriculture and allied sectors effectively.

The department’s efforts have been directed towards enhancing productivity and sustainability in agriculture. DARE has implemented various research projects aimed at improving crop yields, pest management, and soil health. These initiatives are crucial for addressing the challenges faced by farmers and ensuring food security in the country.

Collaborative Research Efforts

Collaboration is a key aspect of DARE’s operations. The department works closely with several ministries, including Agriculture, Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying, as well as the Ministry of Science and Technology. This collaborative approach enables DARE to leverage expertise and resources from various sectors, enhancing the effectiveness of its research projects.

Through these partnerships, DARE has been able to undertake numerous research initiatives that address critical issues in agriculture. These projects often focus on innovative solutions to improve agricultural practices and increase resilience against climate change. By working together with other government bodies and research institutions, DARE aims to achieve its goals more efficiently and effectively.
