Four years ago, Ashutosh Mahida faced significant challenges when the COVID-19 pandemic impacted his family’s livelihood. The young fast bowler, now 18, stepped onto the field for the India A Under-19 team in Bengaluru, participating in a triangular series featuring India A, India B, and Afghanistan. Despite the hardships, Mahida remained focused on his cricketing dreams, supported by his father, who has now returned to his passion for choreography after a difficult period of selling vegetables to make ends meet.
Overcoming Adversity
Ashutosh Mahida’s journey to the cricket field has been marked by resilience. When the pandemic struck, his father, Chirag Mahida, a choreographer, lost his primary source of income. To support the family, Ashutosh helped sell vegetables while continuing to pursue his passion for cricket. Reflecting on those tough times, he shared, “Those were challenging times, but we didn’t give up. My father encouraged me to focus on cricket even during our troubles.” His determination paid off as his father’s situation improved, allowing him to return to his work in choreography.
Mahida’s love for cricket began at the age of nine, spurred on by his father’s encouragement. He quickly developed a talent for fast bowling and was soon playing in inter-club tournaments. His skills earned him a spot on the Baroda U-16 squad in 2022, where he showcased his potential in various competitions, including the Vijay Merchant Trophy and the U-19 Cooch Behar Trophy, where he took 16 wickets in five matches.
Rising Star in Youth Cricket
Despite facing injuries that sidelined him at times, Mahida’s commitment to the sport never wavered. Earlier this month, he participated in the U-19 One Day Challenger Trophy in Hyderabad, marking his debut in international cricket. “This is my first international tournament, but I am not nervous. My aim is to help my team win,” he stated confidently. His positive mindset and focus on teamwork highlight his maturity as a young athlete.
Mahida’s coach at Motibaug Cricket Club, Digvijay Rathwa, praised his talent and potential. He recalled a standout performance by Mahida in the HD Zaveri League, where he took four wickets in a crucial match against the Reliance team. Rathwa noted, “He is the kind of bowler who likes to strike fear in the hearts of batsmen through pace. He will go a long way.” Such endorsements from experienced coaches underscore Mahida’s promising future in cricket.
Triangular Series and Future Prospects
The youth triangular series, which commenced at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, features a double round-robin format. Each team, including India A, India B, and Afghanistan, is set to play four matches, with the top two teams advancing to the final on November 30. This tournament serves as a vital preparation for the upcoming ICC U-19 World Cup scheduled to take place in Zimbabwe and Namibia in January and February next year.
As Mahida and his teammates compete, they aim to showcase their skills and secure a spot in the final. The series not only provides valuable experience but also serves as a platform for young talents to shine on an international stage. With players like Mahida emerging, the future of Indian cricket looks bright as they prepare for global challenges ahead.
