Former RCB Captain Shocks Fans with News of Venkatesh Iyer’s Omission from Playing XI
Former Indian cricket captain Anil Kumble has suggested that Venkatesh Iyer may not make it into the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) starting lineup at the beginning of the upcoming IPL season. RCB, the defending champions, are focused on maintaining stability within their established team. They acquired Iyer for Rs seven crore during the IPL mini auction, a significant decrease from the Rs 23.75 crore that Kolkata Knight Riders paid to retain him last season. Kumble emphasized that RCB is unlikely to rush Iyer into the playing eleven, prioritizing continuity over immediate changes.
RCB’s Strategy for Stability
Kumble, speaking as an expert on the TATA IPL Auction Review for JioStar, highlighted RCB’s strategy of continuity. He stated, “Venkatesh Iyer will not be in the playing eleven at the start. You do not want to create doubt in a winning team.” This approach reflects the franchise’s commitment to supporting younger players already in their ranks. Kumble noted that RCB’s decision not to pursue leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi was intentional, aiming to ensure that Suyash Sharma feels secure in his position without the pressure of competing against a senior spinner.
Iyer’s Role in a Settled Team
Sanjay Bangar, a former Indian all-rounder and fellow JioStar expert, echoed Kumble’s sentiments regarding Iyer’s potential role. While acknowledging Iyer’s talent and consistency, Bangar pointed out the challenge of breaking into a well-established team. He remarked on Iyer’s confidence but admitted uncertainty about his immediate inclusion in the playing eleven. Bangar mentioned that RCB is looking to add left-handed options and has the flexibility to integrate Iyer gradually, similar to how they managed Krunal Pandya last season.
Auction Insights and Player Performance
Iyer entered the auction with a base price of Rs two crore, attracting interest from multiple franchises, including Lucknow Super Giants and Gujarat Titans, before RCB secured him. Across 56 IPL innings, Iyer has accumulated 1,468 runs at an average of 29.12, with a strike rate exceeding 137, including one century and 12 half-centuries. However, his last season was challenging, as he only managed 142 runs in seven innings for KKR, raising questions about his form despite his hefty price tag.
RCB’s New Additions
In addition to Iyer, RCB bolstered their squad during the auction by signing left-arm pacer Mangesh Yadav for Rs 5.2 crore and English wicketkeeper-batter Jordan Cox. They also acquired 18-year-old Satvik Deswal for Rs 30 lakh, along with Under-19 players Vihaan Malhotra and Kanishk Chauhan at base price. New Zealand fast bowler Jacob Duffy was also brought in for Rs two crore, further enhancing RCB’s roster as they prepare for the upcoming season.
