Flipkart Set to Launch Food Delivery Service Within a Month
NEW DELHI: Flipkart is set to enter the food delivery market within the next month, marking a significant expansion of its e-commerce platform. The Walmart-owned company plans to launch a pilot program in Bangalore, exploring the possibility of a separate app while also integrating the service on the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC). Flipkart Group CEO Kalyan Krishnamurthy emphasized the company’s commitment to innovation and a strong value proposition, although he did not provide specific details about the rollout.
The food delivery sector has been dominated by Swiggy and Zomato, which together hold a substantial share of the market. As of the end of December, Zomato accounted for approximately 57% of the food delivery space, while Swiggy held around 43%, according to Datum Intelligence estimates. Despite this apparent duopoly, Krishnamurthy believes that the market is always evolving. He noted that new players will continue to emerge, driven by innovation and disruption.
Flipkart has diversified its offerings over the years, expanding from books to travel services and groceries. Krishnamurthy, who is nearing a decade in his role as CEO, remarked on the growth of the e-commerce industry in India. He pointed out that the adoption curve in India mirrors global trends, progressing from books and media to consumer electronics and eventually to essentials.
With the rise of quick commerce, new entrants like Blinkit and Zepto have disrupted the market. However, Krishnamurthy expressed confidence in Flipkart’s approach, stating that value proposition remains central to their strategy. He acknowledged past attempts to enter the quick commerce space and noted that customer behavior has evolved rapidly, leading to increased adoption.
Currently, Flipkart is focusing on Gen Z consumers, who are driving significant sales in categories such as clothing, fashion, and beauty. Krishnamurthy highlighted that this demographic is increasingly seeking experiences alongside products, with Gen Z accounting for nearly half of sales in certain segments. The company is also exploring live commerce to enhance customer engagement and showcase products effectively.
