Significance of the Fisheries Sector in India

India’s fisheries and aquaculture sector is a crucial contributor to the economy, sustaining approximately 30 million livelihoods and driving employment throughout the value chain. Since 2015, the government has invested over โ‚น38,572 crore in initiatives such as the Blue Revolution Scheme and the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) to promote sustainable growth in this sector. The rapid expansion of fisheries and aquaculture has led to the emergence of more than 300 startups, which are leveraging advanced technologies like blockchain, IoT, and AI to tackle grassroots challenges and enhance productivity.

The Department of Fisheries has implemented various initiatives to support these startups, including the Matsya Manthan series, which facilitates knowledge exchange among stakeholders. To further bolster the fisheries startup ecosystem, dedicated incubation centers have been established, such as the LINAC-NCDC Fisheries Business Incubation Centre in Gurugram and a similar center at Guwahati Biotech Park. These centers aim to support at least 100 fisheries startups, cooperatives, and self-help groups, ensuring a robust framework for innovation and growth in the sector.

Future Prospects and Government Support

The government is committed to fostering a conducive environment for innovation in the fisheries sector. Regular stakeholder consultations are conducted to address challenges faced by startups, provide financial assistance, and shape policy interventions that drive growth. By focusing on collaboration and technological advancements, the Fisheries Startup Conclave 2.0 aims to create a vibrant ecosystem that not only supports existing enterprises but also encourages new ventures in the fisheries and aquaculture sectors.
