Fighting Anemia: How India is Helping Young Girls and Women Stay Healthy

OV Desk

Anemia is a major focus for this year’s Poshan Maah celebrations. Anemia is a health problem that mostly affects young children, teenage girls, pregnant women, and women of childbearing age. It’s especially important to address anemia during the teenage years to prevent its effects on future generations.

To highlight the importance of this issue, the Ministry of Women and Child Development (WCD) has been working with other ministries to create special themes and activities focused on anemia. During last year’s Poshan Maah in September 2023, more than 35 crore awareness activities were reported, with around 4 crore focused specifically on anemia.

The program has reached out directly to 69 lakh pregnant women and 43 lakh lactating mothers. It also covers more than 22 lakh teenage girls aged 14-18 years under the Scheme for Adolescent Girls (SAG) in Aspirational Districts and the Northeast Region. With over 10 crore beneficiaries and their families involved, the program is spreading awareness about nutrition across the country, helping to build a healthier, anemia-free India.

Engaging teenage girls is key to speeding up the fight against malnutrition. The Ministry of WCD is also supporting the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare’s (MoH&FW) Anemia Mukt Bharat program to combat anemia nationwide.

In addition, the Ministry of WCD, in collaboration with the Ministry of Ayush, is running a special program to improve the nutrition of teenage girls in five selected districts. This program uses Ayurveda-based treatments like drakshavleh and punarnavamandoor to help manage anemia and boost the health of young girls.
