Exclusive: Delayed Bengali Film Dhumketu Takes on War 2 in West Bengal, Selling 18,000 Tickets

The film industry is buzzing with anticipation as two major releases, Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR’s War 2 and Rajinikanth’s Coolie, are set to clash at the box office. However, in West Bengal, the Bengali film Dhumketu is making waves, emerging as a strong contender against both films. With its release scheduled for August 14, Dhumketu has already sold an impressive 18,000 tickets, showcasing significant excitement among audiences.

Advance Ticket Sales Surge for *Dhumketu*

According to a trade source, *Dhumketu* is generating considerable buzz ahead of its release. The film, which shares its premiere date with *War 2* and *Coolie*, has surprised its makers with the rapid advance ticket sales. As of August 11, the film had sold nearly 18,000 tickets, with numbers continuing to rise. In contrast, *War 2* has sold around 5,000 tickets in the same region. The overwhelming response in West Bengal, particularly in Kolkata, indicates a strong interest in the Bengali film, prompting a shift in show-sharing arrangements among local cinemas.

Show Sharing Arrangements in West Bengal

Yash Raj Films (YRF), the distributor of *War 2*, has traditionally sought maximum showcasing for its films in single-screen and multi-screen theaters. However, recognizing the enthusiasm for *Dhumketu*, YRF has made exceptions in West Bengal. The company has allowed some theaters to share shows between the two films. For instance, popular single-screen theaters in Kolkata, such as Prachi, Asoka, and Menoka, will feature three shows of *War 2* and one show of *Dhumketu*. Other venues, like Jayanti and Binodini, have allocated two shows to *Dhumketu*, reflecting the film’s growing popularity.

Cast and Production Journey of *Dhumketu*

*Dhumketu* features a talented cast, including renowned Bengali actor Dev, Subhashree Ganguly, Parambrata Chatterjee, and Chiranjeet Chakraborty. The film’s production journey has been notably lengthy, with shooting commencing nearly ten years ago in October 2015 and concluding in January 2017. After facing various challenges, *Dhumketu* was finally revived earlier this year, leading to its upcoming release. Despite the long gap since filming, audience interest remains high, with many eager to see the film.

Industry Insights on Delayed Releases

Industry insiders have commented on the unusual success of *Dhumketu*, noting that delayed films often struggle to maintain their appeal. However, this film seems to defy that trend. The audience’s awareness of its lengthy production timeline has not diminished their excitement. Instead, it has created a sense of anticipation, making *Dhumketu* a historic release in the Bengali film industry. As the release date approaches, all eyes will be on how this film performs against the backdrop of two major Bollywood releases.
