Essential WhatsApp Features for Enhanced Account Security

Millions of users depend on WhatsApp for communication, but the app’s widespread use has also attracted hackers and scammers. Recent security threats, including a tactic known as GhostPairing, have raised concerns about user safety. This method deceives individuals into linking their accounts to an attacker’s browser, potentially exposing sensitive information. Additionally, researchers have highlighted vulnerabilities in the app’s contact discovery tool, which can reveal billions of phone numbers, profile photos, and other personal data. To combat these risks, WhatsApp has implemented end-to-end encryption and introduced features like passkey-protected backups. However, users are encouraged to take further steps to enhance their account security.

Privacy Checkup

To begin securing your WhatsApp account, utilize the Privacy Checkup feature. Access this by navigating to Settings, then Privacy, and selecting Privacy Checkup. This tool allows you to manage who can view your profile photo, status updates, and About information. You can also hide your Last Seen and Online status, block unwanted calls and messages, and control who can add you to groups. Additionally, you can manage your blocked contacts, ensuring that only those you trust can reach you. This feature is essential for maintaining your privacy and controlling your interactions on the platform.

Disappearing Messages

WhatsApp offers a Disappearing Messages feature that allows you to set messages to vanish after a specified time frame—24 hours, seven days, or 90 days. To enable this, go to Settings, then Privacy, and select Default message timer. You can apply this setting to all new chats or choose specific conversations. While this feature enhances privacy, it is important to remember that disappearing messages do not prevent recipients from taking screenshots or saving external copies. Therefore, users should remain cautious about the information they share, even in temporary messages.

Two-Factor Authentication

To further protect your account, enable Two-Factor Authentication. This feature requires you to set a security PIN, which adds an extra layer of protection against unauthorized access. You can activate this by going to Settings, then Account, and selecting Two-step verification. Additionally, you can provide an email address for recovery purposes. Using passkeys can also enhance your account’s security. This multi-layered approach helps ensure that only you can access your account, significantly reducing the risk of hacking.

App Lock and Chat Lock

WhatsApp allows users to enhance their privacy through App Lock and Chat Lock features. You can secure the app with Face ID, Touch ID, or fingerprint authentication, making it harder for unauthorized users to gain access. For added privacy, you can lock specific chats by tapping Lock Chat under a contact’s profile. This feature is particularly useful for sensitive conversations, as locked chats can be cleared quickly if needed. By utilizing these locking mechanisms, users can ensure that their private communications remain confidential and secure.
