Enhancing Telecommunication Connectivity Across Rural India
The Indian government is making significant strides to improve telecommunications and internet connectivity, especially in rural and remote areas. Through various initiatives under the Digital Bharat Nidhi, formerly known as the Universal Service Obligation Fund, the government aims to expand telecom services. This includes the installation of mobile towers in underserved regions, ensuring that even the most isolated communities have access to modern communication technologies.
Expanding Mobile Connectivity in Rural Areas
One of the key projects under this initiative is the 4G Saturation project. This ambitious program aims to provide 4G mobile connectivity to 24,680 villages that currently lack coverage. The project also includes a provision to extend services to an additional 20% of villages. This extension accounts for new settlements, rehabilitation efforts, and any areas where existing operators may withdraw services. By focusing on these underserved regions, the government hopes to bridge the digital divide and ensure that all citizens have access to reliable mobile services.
In addition to the 4G project, the Union Cabinet has approved the Amended Bharat Net Program. This program has a substantial budget of ₹ 1,39,579 crore and aims to extend broadband connectivity to all 2.64 lakh Gram Panchayats and approximately 3.8 lakh villages across 28 states and 8 Union Territories. The initiative is designed to meet the growing demand for internet services in rural areas, thereby enhancing educational and economic opportunities for residents.
Advancements in 5G Services
The government is also focused on expanding 5G services across the country. To facilitate this, several initiatives have been implemented. These include the assignment of sufficient spectrum for mobile services through auctions and the provisional allotment of 250 MHz carriers in the E-band to telecom service providers. Additionally, financial reforms have been introduced to rationalize the Adjusted Gross Revenue (AGR) and Bank Guarantees (BGs) required from telecom operators.
As a result of these efforts, 5G services are now available in 779 out of 783 districts in India. By October 31, 2024, more than 4.6 lakh 5G Base Transceiver Stations (BTSs) are expected to be installed. This rapid deployment of 5G technology will not only enhance mobile connectivity but also support various sectors, including education, healthcare, and agriculture, by providing faster and more reliable internet access.
Modernizing Broadcasting Infrastructure
In addition to mobile and internet services, the government is also investing in broadcasting infrastructure. The Broadcasting Infrastructure & Network Development (BIND) scheme has been approved for the period from 2021 to 2026, with a total budget of ₹ 2,539.61 crore. This scheme focuses on modernizing and upgrading the Doordarshan network across the country.
Currently, Doordarshan (DD) Free Dish provides free-to-air Direct to Home (DTH) services with full coverage across India, including the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. A special 10-channel C-Band Satellite DTH service operates in these remote areas. Furthermore, various distribution platforms, such as DTH and Headend in the Sky (HITS), utilize satellites and airwaves to deliver TV channels. This ensures that even the most remote and hilly locations receive broadcasting services, contributing to pan-India coverage.
The initiatives undertaken by the Indian government to enhance telecommunications and internet connectivity reflect a commitment to inclusivity and progress. By focusing on rural and remote areas, these projects aim to empower communities and provide them with the tools necessary for growth and development.
