Empowering Young Girls: NAVYA Initiative Launched
The NAVYA initiative, designed to uplift and empower adolescent girls aged 16 to 18 in India’s aspiring districts, was officially launched in June 2025 by the Ministry of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship (MSDE) and the Ministry of Women & Child Development (MWCD). This transformative program aims to equip young girls with essential vocational skills to foster socio-economic independence and improve their prospects for the future.
Key Objectives of NAVYA
This initiative emphasizes a series of key objectives aimed at benefitting the young female demographic. It will provide demand-driven vocational training aligned with both traditional and non-traditional sectors, ensuring that the skills taught are relevant to current job markets. Additionally, the program promotes holistic development by including modules focused on health, nutrition, hygiene, financial literacy, life skills, and legal awareness.
Bridging the Gap to Employment
One of the main goals of NAVYA is to enhance employability and encourage self-employment amongst these young women. This will be facilitated through various avenues, including internships, apprenticeships, and job opportunities, all while maintaining a strong focus on creating a gender-inclusive skilling environment in a safe and supportive training setting. Importantly, the initiative seeks to bridge the gap between education and employment, particularly for girls residing in underserved and rural regions.
Training Overview and Reach
NAVYA’s reach extends to 27 districts across 19 states, with a target to train 3,850 girls under the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana 4.0 (PMKVY 4.0). The training will primarily focus on non-traditional job roles that are anticipated to be in demand in the near future, including fields like digital marketing, cybersecurity, AI-enabled services, and green jobs. Furthermore, participants will also receive training in essential life skills and digital literacy, preparing them for both current and future workforce requirements.
Collaborative Initiatives for Green Skills
The Directorate General of Training (DGT) is collaborating with Shell India Markets Pvt. Ltd. to roll out a Green Skills Training Program centered on Electric Vehicle (EV) technology. This effort, supported under corporate social responsibility (CSR), will involve the establishment of Shell-equipped EV labs in 4 National Skill Training Institutes and 10 to 12 Industrial Training Institutes across five states, including Karnataka, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, and Delhi. Training duration varies:
- 240-hour in-depth EV Technician Training Program in NSTIs with EV labs.
- 90-hour job-focused EV skills training in ITIs with EV labs.
- 50-hour virtual foundational green skills program in ITIs without labs.
- 50-hour Capacity-building program for instructors (Training of Trainers).
Additionally, DGT has developed 169 National Skills Qualifications Framework (NSQF)-compliant courses, including several focused on green skills and EV, to prepare the workforce for key roles in these emerging sectors. This is essential for fostering environmental sustainability and meeting the industry’s pressing demand for skilled manpower nationwide.
