Empowering Women Entrepreneurs: Government Initiatives on the Rise

The latest data from the Udyam Registration Portal reveals that as of February 28, 2026, there are over 30.7 million women-led enterprises registered across India. This significant milestone highlights the increasing participation of women in the country’s micro and small enterprise sector, supported by various government initiatives aimed at fostering their growth and success.

Credit Guarantee Scheme Benefits

The Government has implemented the Credit Guarantee Scheme (CGS) specifically designed for Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs). This scheme offers credit guarantees for loans made by Member Lending Institutions (MLIs) under the Credit Guarantee Trust for Micro and Small Enterprises (CGTMSE). Notably, women-led MSEs benefit from enhanced credit guarantee coverage of 90%, compared to the standard 75% for other categories, alongside a 10% reduction in the guarantee fee. This initiative is pivotal in providing women entrepreneurs with easier access to financing without the burden of collateral security.

Skill Development and Training Initiatives

Under the Prime Minister Vishwakarma Scheme, the government is keen on enhancing the skill sets of artisans and craftspeople. This initiative offers Basic Skill Training lasting between 5 to 7 days, and Advanced Training for more than 15 days, all while providing stipends. Training modules cover essential topics such as entrepreneurial orientation, financial, and digital literacy, ensuring artisans are equipped for modern market demands. Beneficiaries also receive marketing support, which includes assistance with e-commerce platforms and product branding.

Support for Traditional Industries

Further fostering the entrepreneurial spirit, the Scheme of Fund for Regeneration of Traditional Industries (SFURTI) offers cluster-based training interventions. These programs focus on skill enhancement, digital marketing, and institution development, promoting exposure to modern techniques and best practices. Artisans are encouraged to embrace digital avenues through onboarding on e-commerce platforms, improving their market reach.

Government Efforts to Boost Women’s Participation

The government has taken multiple steps to encourage women’s participation in MSEs. Special registration drives target women-owned MSMEs, while the Public Procurement Policy mandates that at least 3% of annual procurement by government departments comes from women entrepreneurs. Additionally, the Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP) provides a credit-linked subsidy, benefitting approximately 40% women among its total beneficiaries.

Other programs like the ‘Skill Upgradation and Mahila Coir Yojana’ focus on training women in the coir sector, while participation in trade fairs is fully subsidized for women entrepreneurs under the Procurement and Marketing Support Scheme. The Yashasvini campaign aims to raise awareness about available schemes and support among women entrepreneurs.

These combined efforts reflect a strong commitment from the government to empower women in entrepreneurship, positioning them as a vital force in India’s economic landscape. The Minister of State for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, Sushri Shobha Karandlaje, shared this information during a recent query in the Rajya Sabha, emphasizing the government’s ongoing efforts to support women-led enterprises throughout the nation.
