Empowering Women and Youth Through Financial Literacy Workshop
The Investor Education and Protection Fund Authority (IEPFA), part of the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, Government of India, hosted a significant Investor Education and Protection Workshop in collaboration with the National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER) and Sapphire International School to mark International Women’s Day. The event aimed to enhance financial literacy and raise awareness regarding investor protection among young students, particularly women, to foster a financially inclusive society.
Championing Financial Education for Future Generations
The workshop was themed ‘The Future is Now: Financial Education for Gen-Alpha and Bridging the Gender Gap for Viksit Bharat.’ It gathered policymakers, financial specialists, and educators who discussed the critical role of responsible financial behavior and the necessity for gender-inclusive participation in India’s rapidly evolving digital economy.
In her welcoming remarks to the participants, Ms. Ekta Soni, Principal of Sapphire International School, emphasized the need to arm young learners, especially girls, with financial knowledge to help them build confidence and independence. Her insights set a positive tone for the discussions that followed.
The keynote address by Ms. Anita Shah Akella, CEO of IEPFA & Joint Secretary at the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, highlighted the urgent necessity for early financial education, especially as India experiences a surge in digital payments. She pointed out that equipping young citizens with the right skills will enable them to develop safe financial habits, thereby protecting them from potential cyber fraud. Furthermore, she stressed the importance of empowering women and girls through financial awareness and informed decision-making.
Engaging Discussions on Financial Literacy
Moderated by Dr. C. S. Mohapatra, IEPF Chair Professor at NCAER, the panel discussion delved into aligning financial education with India’s digital transformation. Panelists included experts like Dr. Sonal Tikku, Ms. Himani Lath, and CS Shivam Sharma, who shared valuable insights into cyber safety, financial planning, ethical practices, and regulatory awareness.
In a unique outreach initiative, the workshop also included sessions for housekeeping staff, during which experts simplified concepts around savings, investments, and safe financial practices. An interactive Q&A segment provided participants an opportunity to inquire about digital safety and effective financial planning strategies.
The event culminated in a certificate distribution ceremony for the quiz winners and all participants, further reinforcing the commitment of IEPFA and NCAER to promote financial literacy and empower youth and communities in alignment with the vision of Viksit Bharat.
