Empowering North-East India’s Textile Sector: A National Initiative
In a significant move to bolster the textile industry in North-Eastern India, the Ministry of Textiles organized a high-level conclave titled “Strengthening and Empowering the Textile Sector of the North-Eastern Region of India” today in Guwahati. This conference served as a vital platform for stakeholders to discuss strategies aimed at propelling the growth of the textile sector across the North-Eastern states through improved policy coordination, investment promotion, skills enhancement, value addition, and better market access.
The event was graced by esteemed guests, including the Hon’ble Union Minister for Textiles, Shri Giriraj Singh, and Hon’ble Minister of State for Textiles, Shri Pabitra Margherita. In attendance were textile and industry ministers, Members of Parliament, senior officials from North-Eastern states and the Central Government, alongside representatives from key textile institutions.
During his address, Union Minister for Textiles, Shri Giriraj Singh, emphasized the integral role the North-Eastern region plays in the country’s textile sector. He reaffirmed the Union government’s commitment to fostering its development. The conclave highlighted the rich tapestry of the region’s textile heritage, showcasing its GI-tagged products, vibrant silk varieties, bamboo crafts, and particularly the strong involvement of women artisans and weavers in the industry.
The discussions focused on the necessity for a coordinated and integrated approach to fortify value chains within the textile sector. There was shared recognition of the need to boost exports, attract investments, and harmonize traditional textile skills with modern technology, innovative designs, and enhanced market connections.
This gathering marks a crucial step towards transforming the textile landscape of North-Eastern India, making it an attractive hub for both local and international markets. By leveraging its unique cultural assets and skilled workforce, the region is poised to make significant contributions to India’s textile revolution.
