Empowering Livelihoods: NITI Aayog Workshop Boosts Tribal Enterprises
The recent workshop, “Strengthening Tribal and Rural Livelihoods through Sustainable Enterprise Development,” was held in Ranchi, Jharkhand, as part of the NITI State Workshop Series. Organized by NITI Aayog in collaboration with the Jharkhand State Livelihood Promotion Society (JSLPS) and the Department of Rural Development, the event aimed to enhance livelihoods in rural and tribal communities.
In his keynote address, Professor Ramesh Chand, a Member of NITI Aayog, highlighted the necessity of inclusive development. He stated that this requires planned urbanization and a transition from job-seeking to job-creating mindsets. He placed a strong emphasis on enterprise-led growth, advocating for the empowerment of rural and tribal communities to become job creators rather than dependents.
Shri Ananya Mittal, the CEO of JSLPS, underscored the significance of the workshop in fostering women-led enterprises, particularly within the tribal and rural areas of Jharkhand. This initiative is seen as a critical step towards strengthening local economies and ensuring the participation of women in livelihood activities.
Shri Surendra Mehra, Programme Director at NITI Aayog, elaborated on the workshop’s goals. He noted that the primary objective is to identify challenges and adaptable models from other states that can effectively be implemented in Jharkhand. Emphasizing inter-departmental and inter-scheme collaboration, he reinforced the need for innovative pathways to enhance tribal enterprises and improve education, skill development, and overall livelihood quality.
During the discussions, Shri K. Srinivasan, Secretary of the Department of Rural Development for Jharkhand, highlighted essential steps to support women entrepreneurs. He pointed out the need for improved land use, access to finance, and stronger market linkages. He also spotlighted state initiatives like Brand Palash and Adiva that focus on Non-Timber Forest Produce-based livelihoods.
Participants were encouraged to explore the exhibition area, where 22 stalls displayed community-led innovations and market-oriented livelihood models that harness local resources and traditional knowledge.
The afternoon session featured two panels that discussed emerging enterprise opportunities in rural and tribal Jharkhand. They also focused on creating a collaborative ecosystem involving government, academia, industry, and civil society to bolster sustainable livelihoods.
Concluding the workshop, Shri Amit Bhardwaj, Deputy Advisor at NITI Aayog, outlined the way forward. He emphasized the importance of policy convergence and institutional strengthening to develop scalable enterprise models aimed at enhancing rural and tribal livelihoods, reiterating the Indian government’s commitment to support state-led initiatives.
