Election Commissioners Unite for Stronger Electoral Processes
The Election Commission of India (ECI) held a pivotal National Round Table Conference with State Election Commissioners (SECs) today at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi. Chaired by Chief Election Commissioner Shri Gyanesh Kumar, the event marked a significant step forward in enhancing coordination and collaboration across electoral bodies.
In his opening remarks, CEC Kumar emphasized the crucial role of institutional harmony between the ECI and SECs. He pointed out that unifying efforts in areas such as electoral roll management, technology adoption, and exchange of successful practices could significantly boost the integrity and efficiency of India’s electoral processes.
Strengthening Trust and Collaboration
Election Commissioner Dr. S.S. Sandhu echoed these sentiments, urging SECs to learn from each other’s successful models. He highlighted trust as the foundation of every electoral process, stressing the need for close cooperation between the ECI and state commissions.
Meanwhile, Election Commissioner Dr. Vivek Joshi focused on the importance of digital collaboration, advocating for the use of the ECINET platform to streamline operations between the ECI and SECs. The conference served as a valuable forum for exchanging ideas, fostering a spirit of cooperative federalism in electoral management.
National Declaration and Democratic Foundations
During the conference, participants adopted a new National Declaration. This declaration affirmed that pure electoral rolls are fundamental to democracy. It further stated that the ECI would collaborate with SECs to align laws concerning Panchayats and Municipal Bodies with those for Parliamentary and State Legislature elections, thereby serving national and constitutional interests.
Additionally, the conference saw the launch of a new ECI publication titled ‘A Confluence of Democracies.’ This publication documents the recent India International Conference on Democracy and Election Management (IICDEM) 2026, which brought together nearly 100 international delegates from over 70 countries and featured extensive discussions across 36 thematic sessions.
A Commitment to Future Cooperation
Marking its significance, this National Round Table Conference was the first of its kind in 27 years, setting a promising precedent for future collaborations. The conference concluded with a commitment from the ECI and SECs to engage in an annual round table, ideally coinciding with international conferences hosted by the ECI. A joint team of legal and technical officers will analyze the suggestions made during the conference to establish a detailed roadmap for enhancing electoral processes across the nation.
