DST and DRDO Collaborate to Enhance Ground-Based Space Capabilities
An institute under the Department of Science and Technology (DST) has entered into a significant partnership with a Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) institute. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aims to leverage the observational capabilities of the Aryabhatta Research Institute of Observational Sciences (ARIES) to enhance India’s ground-based Space Situational Awareness (SSA). This collaboration, signed on May 13, 2025, marks a strategic step towards advancing the nation’s space exploration and surveillance capabilities.
Details of the MoU
The MoU was formalized between ARIES, located in Nainital, and the Instruments Research & Development Establishment (IRDE) in Dehradun. Dr. Manish Kumar Naja, Director of ARIES, and Dr. Ajay Kumar, Director of IRDE, signed the agreement, which outlines a collaborative framework for utilizing ARIES’s advanced observational facilities. The partnership will focus on monitoring and acquiring data on space objects, which is crucial for enhancing India’s capabilities in SSA.
The agreement also emphasizes the joint development of Electro-Optics systems tailored for both astronomy and SSA applications. This includes the integration of artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML) techniques for image processing and data analysis. The MoU aims to foster knowledge exchange, training activities, and capacity building through scientific and technical research and development.
Significance of ARIES and IRDE
ARIES is recognized as a leading research institute specializing in astronomy, astrophysics, and atmospheric sciences. It is equipped with state-of-the-art national observing facilities, including the 3.6-meter Devasthal Optical Telescope and the ST Radar system. These resources position ARIES as a pivotal player in advancing scientific research in space.
On the other hand, IRDE is a prominent institution focused on designing and developing Electro-Optical surveillance systems for the Armed Forces. Its work spans various platforms, including ground, naval, airborne, and space systems. The collaboration with ARIES is expected to enhance the effectiveness of these systems, particularly in the realm of space surveillance.
Collaborative Opportunities and Future Prospects
The MoU represents a strategic alliance between two key scientific institutions in Uttarakhand, aimed at advancing objectives in space surveillance and ground-based astronomy. The geographical proximity of ARIES and IRDE is anticipated to facilitate regular interactions, enabling easier access to facilities and fostering technical exchanges. This close collaboration is expected to lead to coordinated joint activities that will benefit both organizations. The partnership is poised to contribute significantly to India’s capabilities in space exploration and monitoring. By combining the strengths of both institutes, the MoU aims to enhance the nation’s ability to track and analyze space objects, thereby improving overall space situational awareness.
