Dr. Jitendra Singh Reports Rs. 4085 Crore Earned from Cleanliness Campaigns

Union Minister of State Dr. Jitendra Singh announced that the Indian government’s dedicated cleanliness campaigns have generated a remarkable revenue of ₹4,085 crores since their inception in 2021. These campaigns, which focus on the disposal of scrap, including electronic waste from central government offices, have not only contributed to financial gains but also freed up significant space for productive use. The initiatives align with Prime Minister Narendra Modi‘s vision of a cleaner India, which began with a call for cleanliness during his first Independence Day address.

Dr. Jitendra Singh highlighted the success of five annual cleanliness campaigns, each lasting one month, which have collectively earned ₹4,085 crores. The campaigns, initiated in 2021, were designed to address the accumulation of waste in government offices, including outdated files and broken furniture. The first campaign was launched following Prime Minister Modi’s call for cleanliness, which led to the construction of over four lakh toilets in the initial year. Each year, the campaign has evolved, with the latest initiative running from October 2 to October 31, coinciding with Gandhi Jayanti. All government ministries and departments are encouraged to participate actively and report their achievements.

Financial Gains and Space Utilization

The financial impact of the cleanliness campaigns has been significant. In the previous year, the campaign generated approximately ₹3,300 crores, with an additional ₹788.53 crores earned during the current year’s Special Campaign 5.0. This brings the total revenue from these initiatives to over ₹4,085 crores. Dr. Singh emphasized that this amount could fund a major space mission or multiple Chandrayaan missions. Furthermore, the campaigns have resulted in the clearance of 231.75 lakh square feet of space that was previously occupied by waste materials and old furniture, allowing for potential economic development.

Innovative Waste Management Strategies

The current year’s campaign coincides with broader “Waste to Wealth” initiatives led by the Ministry of Science and Technology. These efforts include innovative recycling projects, such as the conversion of hospital waste through technology developed by CSIR-NIIST in Thiruvananthapuram, which is now in use at AIIMS New Delhi. Additionally, CSIR-IIP in Dehradun is recycling used cooking oil, while CSIR-CRRI in New Delhi is utilizing steel sludge for road construction. These projects not only contribute to waste management but also promote sustainable practices within the government.

Dr. Jitendra Singh noted that the success of the cleanliness campaigns reflects a growing commitment to environmental sustainability and efficient resource management within government operations. The financial gains and reclaimed space from these initiatives could lead to new opportunities for economic activity, such as the construction of commercial facilities. As the government continues to prioritize cleanliness and waste management, the ongoing campaigns are expected to play a crucial role in shaping a cleaner and more productive future for India.
