Divya Kala Mela: Empowering Divyangjan Through Art and Innovation

The 30th edition of the Divya Kala Mela kicked off in Dehradun, marking a significant celebration of creativity and empowerment for people with disabilities, or Divyangjan. The event was inaugurated by the Governor of Uttarakhand, Lt. General Shri Gurmit Singh, who emphasized that this gathering is more than just a festival; it serves as an influential platform advocating for the vital contributions of Divyangjan in shaping India into a leading global economy.

An Inspirational Gathering

During the opening ceremony held at Rangers Ground, Governor Singh praised the artistic expressions showcased at the Mela, describing them as vibrant representations of an Aatmanirbhar Bharat, or self-reliant India. He underscored the importance of technology, including artificial intelligence, as tools that open up new opportunities for individuals with disabilities, ensuring that innovation is accessible to all.

Government Support for Integration

Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment, Shri. B. L. Verma, stated that the current government, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has laid down a robust framework through the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016, alongside several welfare initiatives aimed at mainstreaming Divyangjan. He highlighted a budget allocation of ₹375 crore through the Artificial Limbs Manufacturing Corporation of India for assistive devices, promising to touch countless lives.

A Catalyst for Change

Tehri MP, Ms. Mala Rajya Laxmi Shah, deemed the Divya Kala Mela as a significant driver of social change. She commended the government’s efforts to elevate the status of Divyangjan in society, especially citing India’s remarkable performances in the Paralympics as evidence of talent’s boundless nature.

Strengthening Economic Opportunities

MLA Shri Khajan Das labeled the Mela a transformative initiative, giving dignity and opportunities to Divyangjan. In his welcome address, Shri Pradeep A., Director of the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, elaborated that the Mela is designed to link entrepreneurs with employment and financial resources through job fairs, assistive device registrations, and various institutional awareness programs.

Significance of the Mela

This nine-day Mela showcases nearly 90 stalls featuring over 100 artisans and entrepreneurs from 16 different states and union territories. Attendees can explore an array of products, including handicrafts, garments, organic foods, and unique souvenirs. Special events during the fair include a job fair scheduled for 26 February 2026, and the cultural extravaganza “Divya Kala Shakti” will highlight the exceptional talents of Divyang artists on 1 March 2026.

Open to All

Running from 21 February to 1 March, visitors can attend daily from 11:00 AM to 9:00 PM, with free entry for everyone. The vibrant atmosphere, complete with cultural performances and activities, makes Divya Kala Mela not just an exhibition of talent but a genuine celebration of dignity, empowerment, and self-reliance for the Divyangjan community.
