Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge Gets Iconic Statue in London

In a historic tribute to Indian cinema, the beloved film Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ) will soon be honored with a bronze statue in Leicester Square, London. This landmark installation, featuring the film’s stars Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol in a memorable pose, is set to be unveiled this spring as part of the ‘Scenes in the Square’ movie trail. The announcement coincides with the film’s 30th anniversary celebrations, marking its enduring legacy in Bollywood history.

Statue to Celebrate Bollywoodโ€™s Global Impact

The bronze statue will be strategically placed outside the Odeon cinema on the eastern terrace of Leicester Square, a location that holds significance in the film. DDLJ, directed by Aditya Chopra and produced by Yash Raj Films, is celebrated as one of the most successful Hindi films ever made. The film’s narrative, which intertwines romance and cultural themes, has resonated with audiences worldwide since its release in 1995.

Mark Williams, Deputy Chief Executive at Heart of London Business Alliance, expressed enthusiasm about the statue’s addition to the movie trail. He stated, โ€œItโ€™s fantastic to have the opportunity to add to our trail Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol, who are such titans of international cinema. DDLJ is one of the most successful and important Bollywood films of all time, and weโ€™re excited by the prospect of bringing to the trail the first film that actually features Leicester Square as a location.โ€ This installation is expected to draw fans from across the globe, further highlighting the cultural significance of Bollywood in London.

Celebrating 30 Years of DDLJ

As DDLJ marks its 30th anniversary, the film’s impact on the Indian film industry is undeniable. Akshaye Widhani, CEO of Yash Raj Films, remarked on the film’s transformative role in cinema, stating, โ€œWhen DDLJ was released 30 years ago, it became a defining moment for Indian cinema and changed the face of the industry.โ€ He emphasized the film’s ability to spread love and joy globally, showcasing its cultural significance in the UK. The statue serves as a testament to the film’s international appeal and its role in bridging communities through cinema.

The statue will join other iconic figures in the Leicester Square trail, including characters from beloved films such as Harry Potter and Mary Poppins. In addition to the statue, a new stage adaptation titled Come Fall in Love โ€“ The DDLJ Musical is set to premiere at the Manchester Opera House on May 29, 2025, further extending the film’s legacy.

A Tribute to Cultural Diversity

The unveiling of the DDLJ statue is not just a celebration of a film; it represents a broader acknowledgment of Bollywood’s influence on global cinema. Williams noted that the statue is a fitting tribute to the global popularity of Bollywood and a celebration of Londonโ€™s rich diversity. The installation is expected to attract a diverse audience, reinforcing Leicester Square’s status as a hub for film and entertainment. As the statue prepares to take its place among cinematic legends, it symbolizes the enduring legacy of DDLJ and its role in shaping the landscape of Indian cinema. Fans and newcomers alike will soon have the opportunity to pay homage to this iconic film in one of the worldโ€™s most famous squares.
