Diageo Reports India Ranks Among Top Five Global Markets for Smirnoff
India has made significant strides in the global spirits market, with Smirnoff now ranking among the top five markets worldwide. This achievement is largely attributed to innovative flavor offerings, particularly the Minty Jamun variant, according to Praveen Someshwar, the chief executive of Diageo India. Despite facing challenges in Maharashtra, the company reported a resilient performance in the last quarter of the year, showcasing strong growth in its premium product lines.
Smirnoff’s Flavor Innovations Drive Growth
Diageo India’s success with Smirnoff can be largely credited to its flavor-led innovations. The introduction of Minty Jamun has proven to be a game-changer, aligning with the company’s strategy to prioritize flavors that resonate with Indian consumers. Someshwar emphasized that this innovation has not only fueled growth for Smirnoff but has also positively impacted the entire Whites portfolio. The momentum generated by these flavors has been instrumental in propelling India into the top five global markets for Smirnoff, highlighting the effectiveness of the India-first flavor strategy.
Quarterly Performance Amid Challenges
In the October to December quarter, Diageo India reported a “resilient” performance despite ongoing regulatory challenges in Maharashtra. Excluding this state, the company’s prestige-and-above portfolio experienced a 6% increase in volume growth, while net sales value surged by 14%. Someshwar noted that when adjusted for a one-time retail pipeline fill in Andhra Pradesh from the previous year, volumes in the prestige-and-above category remained flat. The adverse impact on volumes in Maharashtra primarily affected the lower end of the portfolio, which helped maintain a national price mix of approximately 10% for the quarter.
Competitive Landscape in Maharashtra
The introduction of locally produced liquor at lower price points in Maharashtra has intensified competition, particularly in the popular and lower-prestige segments. Someshwar pointed out that consumer acceptance has been strongest for the first brand to enter this category, while subsequent launches have struggled to gain traction. In response to these market dynamics, Diageo India has enhanced its pricing strategies, expanded its pocket-pack offerings, and increased on-ground activations for brands like McDowell’s and Royal Challenge. These efforts aim to retain consumer interest and navigate the competitive landscape effectively.
Future Outlook and Regulatory Considerations
Looking ahead, Someshwar expressed cautious optimism regarding demand, noting early signs of improved disposable income and increased consumption during the festive season. The company is closely monitoring regulatory developments that could impact its operations. Additionally, Someshwar highlighted the potential benefits of the India-UK free trade agreement, which, once approved, is expected to positively influence the company’s performance starting from the July to September quarter, in line with existing inventory cycles.
