DGCA and GSV Join Forces to Transform Aviation Education
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has partnered with Gati Shakti Vishwavidyalaya (GSV) to enhance education and expertise in the aviation sector. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed by DGCA chief Shri Faiz Ahmed Kidwai and GSV Vice Chancellor Prof. Manoj Choudhury, commemorating a significant step towards elevating India’s aviation workforce. The event was graced by the presence of Civil Aviation Minister Shi Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu, along with other notable officials from the fields of civil aviation and railways.
Advancing Aviation Expertise
During the signing ceremony, Minister Rammohan Naidu highlighted the historic nature of this partnership, calling it a foundational move that could transform the aviation sector. He referred to the initiative as part of a broader vision outlined by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who aims to make aviation not just a luxury but a universal mode of travel.
Focused on Future Workforce
The primary goal of the MoU is to create a robust pipeline of skilled professionals for the aviation and Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) sectors, starting with a new undergraduate program in Aviation Maintenance Engineering (AME). This curriculum is set to launch for the academic year 2026-27. Minister Naidu emphasized that this collaborative effort aims to develop a three-year B.Sc. (AME) program that balances academic rigor with industry needs and regulatory standards.
Partnership in Research and Training
The agreement also outlines plans for GSV to act as a research partner with DGCA in several key areas, including Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) and Aircraft Maintenance. Additionally, GSV will participate in capacity building for DGCA officers, ensuring a well-trained body of professionals ready to support a booming aviation industry.
Preparing for a Thriving Aviation Market
With India’s aviation market expected to expand significantly, Rammohan Naidu stated the demand for pilots is projected to rise considerably in the next decade. With over 1,700 aircraft on order, projections suggest that India’s airspace could support close to 3,000 aircraft by 2036. He stressed the necessity of nurturing the workforce required to support this growth. The Minister also reiterated the vision of creating an Atmanirbhar Bharat, emphasizing the need for self-reliance and domestic training.
Establishing a Competitive Edge
Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw further reiterated GSV’s commitment to industry collaboration, mentioning that the university has formed alliances with 62 industry partners aimed at producing job-ready graduates. He suggested the establishment of a center for excellence in precision manufacturing engineering at GSV as part of the initiative to realize a developed India by 2047.
The MoU marks a pivotal step in bridging the gap between regulation, academia, and industry. By fostering innovative curriculum design and practical training opportunities, the DGCA and GSV partnership is poised to create a future-ready workforce that will not only support India’s expanding fleet of aircraft but also enhance the country’s position as a global hub for MRO services.
