During a parliamentary session, MP Ajith Perera raised alarms about a stranded bus near the Kala Wewa reservoir, prompting calls for helicopter assistance. Minister of Justice Harshana Nanayakkara confirmed that the bus was indeed stranded due to hazardous conditions. The armed forces have been deployed, and a helicopter has been authorized for the rescue mission. Reports indicate that a military helicopter successfully airlifted a man who had taken refuge atop a coconut tree overnight, showcasing the ongoing efforts to save those trapped by the floods.
Widespread Disruption and Casualties
The floods have severely disrupted daily life in Sri Lanka, with over 44,000 individuals affected by the extreme weather. Key roads connecting provinces have been closed, and the Railway Department has canceled all but essential train services. The DMC has reported that approximately 20,500 army troops are engaged in relief and rescue operations across the country. Additionally, students preparing for their Advanced Level Exams have had their tests postponed due to the adverse conditions. This year’s monsoon season has brought unprecedented weather, reminiscent of the catastrophic flooding in June 2003, which resulted in 254 fatalities and widespread displacement.
