Department of Consumer Affairs Invites Innovative Solutions for Consumer Issues in Smart India Hackathon 2025

The Department of Consumer Affairs in India is collaborating with the Ministry of Education’s Innovation Cell and the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) for the Smart India Hackathon (SIH) 2025. This initiative invites students to devise innovative solutions to six consumer-related challenges, with the aim of fostering creativity and practical problem-solving skills. While one problem statement regarding onion storage has already closed for submissions, the remaining five are open until October 15, 2025, encouraging widespread participation from students across the nation.

Innovative Solutions for Onion Storage

One of the key challenges presented in the hackathon is the development of improved onion storage technology to enhance the shelf life of onions. With 65% of onions harvested during the rabi season, it is crucial that they remain viable until the kharif harvest. Unfortunately, farmers face significant losses—ranging from 30% to 50%—due to rotting, sprouting, and weight loss. The current storage methods, primarily natural ventilation, are susceptible to heat and humidity, leading to high post-harvest losses. The hackathon encourages participants to explore affordable technologies that can control temperature and humidity, thereby reducing spoilage. Solutions may include smart storage systems utilizing solar energy, plasma technology, IoT, and AI/ML to minimize waste and stabilize market prices, ultimately benefiting farmers.

Advancements in Electrical Safety Testing

Another challenge focuses on creating an automated high-current short-circuit test system for miniature circuit breakers (MCBs). MCBs are essential for ensuring electrical safety, and rigorous testing is necessary to verify their performance under fault conditions. Traditional manual or semi-automated testing methods can lead to inaccuracies and safety risks, particularly at high fault currents. The proposed automated system aims to enhance testing reliability by integrating an Automated R–XL Circuit Module for precise power factor control and a transformer-based power source capable of delivering up to 10,000A. This innovation will not only improve accuracy and repeatability but also enhance operator safety, thereby ensuring that MCBs meet stringent certification standards.

Streamlining Cable Testing Procedures

The hackathon also addresses the need for an automated specimen preparation system for cable testing. Accurate specimen preparation is vital for reliable testing according to Indian standards, yet manual processes are often time-consuming and prone to errors. The proposed solution involves an automated system that utilizes motorized feeding, programmable blades, and auto diameter sensing to ensure precise cutting and stripping of cable specimens. By implementing a PLC/HMI-based control system, the process can be managed efficiently, resulting in uniform, high-quality specimens. This innovation is expected to reduce preparation time and costs while improving accuracy and safety in cable testing.

Enhancing Compliance in E-Commerce

The final challenge involves developing an automated compliance checker for legal metrology declarations on e-commerce platforms. As e-commerce continues to grow rapidly, adherence to the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011, becomes increasingly important. Many listings fail to comply with mandatory details, prompting the need for an AI-based verification system. This tool will utilize optical character recognition (OCR) to extract text from product images, crawl listings in real-time, and validate data against legal guidelines. By flagging compliance issues and providing regulators with a dashboard to monitor violations, this system aims to streamline compliance checks, reduce manual inspections, and promote fair trade practices in the digital marketplace.
