Delhi’s Air Quality Shows Improvement Amid GRAP Changes
Delhi’s air quality has been a pressing concern for residents and authorities alike. However, recent data indicates a positive shift in the air quality index (AQI) of the National Capital Region (NCR). The Sub-Committee on the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) recently convened to assess the situation and make necessary adjustments to the existing regulations. As of the latest updates, the average AQI has shown a downward trend, prompting the committee to revoke certain restrictions under Stage-III of the GRAP. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) and the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) have provided forecasts indicating that these favorable conditions may persist, leading to further improvements in air quality.
Despite the positive trend, the IMD/IITM forecasts suggest that Delhi’s average AQI may still fall within the “Poor” category (201-300 AQI) in the coming days. The Sub-Committee on GRAP has taken these factors into account while reviewing the air quality parameters, leading to a significant decision regarding the implementation of restrictions.
Revocation of Stage-III Restrictions
In light of the improving air quality and the potential for continued favorable conditions, the CAQM Sub-Committee has unanimously decided to revoke Stage-III of the revised GRAP across the NCR. This decision comes into immediate effect and aims to alleviate the disruptive nature of restrictions that impact numerous stakeholders and the general public. However, it is crucial to note that actions under Stages II and I of the revised GRAP will remain in place. These measures will be closely monitored and enforced to ensure compliance.
The Sub-Committee emphasized the importance of maintaining strict vigilance, particularly under Stages II and I, to prevent the need for re-implementation of Stage-III restrictions. This proactive approach aims to balance public health concerns with the need for economic activity and daily life in the NCR. While Stage-III restrictions have been lifted, the CAQM Sub-Committee remains committed to monitoring the air quality situation closely. The committee will review air quality data and forecasts from IMD/IITM regularly to make informed decisions moving forward. Citizens are urged to adhere to the guidelines outlined in the citizen charter under GRAP Stages II and I. Compliance with these measures is essential to ensure that air quality does not deteriorate further. Additionally, construction and demolition sites, as well as industrial units that have received closure orders due to violations, must not resume operations without explicit permission from the Commission.
