Delhi Revokes Stage-I of Air Quality Actions Amid Improvement
In a significant development, the Sub-Committee on Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) within the Commission for Air Quality Management has lifted all Stage-I measures across the National Capital Region (NCR) effective immediately. This decision follows a marked improvement in Delhi’s air quality, which was attributed to favorable meteorological conditions.
Recent data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) indicated that Delhi’s daily average Air Quality Index (AQI) improved dramatically, dropping from 175 on March 15, 2026, to 119 on March 16, 2026. A meeting convened by the CAQM Sub-Committee assessed the air quality landscape in the region, bolstered by air quality forecasts and meteorological data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM).
Forecasts Favor Continued Air Quality Improvement
The Sub-Committee noted that the AQI in Delhi recorded at 4:00 PM on March 16 showed substantial improvement at 119. Future forecasts from IMD/IITM suggest that air quality is expected to remain within the ‘Moderate’ category in the coming days, facilitating the decision to revoke Stage-I actions.
Ongoing Commitment to Air Quality Management
Despite the uplift of Stage-I measures, the Sub-Committee advised all relevant State Governments and the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (GNCTD) to adhere to the statutory directives, advisories, and orders previously issued by the Commission. This includes complying with regulations from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change and the CPCB across all implicated sectors.
The agencies involved have been instructed to prioritize the implementation of actions outlined in the Commission’s comprehensive policy for combating air pollution in the NCR. Specifically, they are urged to implement effective dust mitigation measures to maintain the recent improvements in air quality.
The Sub-Committee is committed to closely monitoring the air quality situation and plans to reassess conditions periodically. This will ensure timely responses to any future changes in air quality, relying on ongoing forecasts from IMD and IITM.
