Delhi-NCR Enhances Air Quality Monitoring Network Significantly
In a landmark initiative, the Delhi-National Capital Region (NCR) is set to bolster its air quality monitoring framework by expanding the network of Continuous Ambient Air Quality Monitoring Stations (CAAQMS). This effort aims to provide comprehensive spatial coverage, improve data reliability, and enable scientific assessments of air pollution throughout the region. The strategic enhancement seeks to facilitate real-time air quality monitoring and support informed policy decisions aimed at reducing air pollution levels.
The Commission for Air Quality Management in NCR and Adjoining Areas (CAQM) has reported on the addition of 27 new CAAQMS stations in the region, which includes six in Delhi, seven in Haryana, four in Rajasthan, and ten in Uttar Pradesh. This expansion is being implemented alongside the existing 84 monitoring stations already operational across Delhi-NCR, providing a robust framework for effective air quality management.
Currently, 6 of the new monitoring stations have already been installed in Delhi, while the others across Haryana, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh are in various stages of installation. These new additions are crucial as they will enhance pollution tracking and help in identifying the sources more efficiently.
Enhancing Scientific Criteria for Monitoring
As part of the ongoing efforts to improve air quality surveillance, the CAQM is also refining the scientific criteria that will guide future expansions of the air quality monitoring network. The organization concluded that monitoring density must effectively reflect population distribution and land use characteristics—including residential, traffic, and industrial areas. This consideration also includes urban development and the rapid growth of suburban regions.
To ensure optimal monitoring coverage, new standards have been established: roughly one monitoring station will be set up for every 25 square kilometers in densely populated areas, while less populated areas will have one station per 50 square kilometers. Moreover, there is a focused effort to monitor peri-urban and suburban zones to assess pollution flows and analyze the effects of urban sprawl on local air quality.
Future Additions to Strengthen the Network
In alignment with these updated criteria, an additional 46 CAAQMS will be installed, bringing the total number of monitoring stations in the Delhi-NCR to 157. This comprehensive network will include 60 stations in Delhi, 45 in Haryana, nine in Rajasthan, and 43 in Uttar Pradesh. The CAQM stresses the importance of a robust and densely packed air quality monitoring network as essential in tackling air pollution in the area.
This systematic augmentation of the air quality monitoring infrastructure will significantly improve the ability to trace pollution sources, track air quality trends, and take decisive actions as required. The CAQM remains dedicated to ensuring that the air quality monitoring strategies are meticulous and forward-thinking, addressing both current and future challenges in air pollution management.
