Daryl Mitchell Surpasses Virat Kohli for Top ODI Ranking; Rohit Sharma Falls to Fourth

Daryl Mitchell has surged to the top of the ICC men’s ODI batting rankings, surpassing Virat Kohli after an impressive series against India that saw New Zealand clinch a 2–1 victory. Mitchell’s remarkable performance, highlighted by back-to-back centuries, has earned him 845 rating points, while Kohli now holds 795 points, placing him in second. The two players stand out significantly ahead of their competitors, including Ibrahim Zadran, Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, and Babar Azam.

Mitchell’s Stellar Performance

Daryl Mitchell’s ascent to the No. 1 spot in the ODI rankings is a testament to his exceptional form. His two centuries in the recent series against India were pivotal in securing New Zealand’s victory. With these performances, Mitchell has now accumulated four ODI centuries against India, putting him just one behind AB de Villiers for the most ODI hundreds by a South African batter against the Indian team. His back-to-back scores exceeding 130 runs have also tied him with Martin Guptill for the most 130-plus scores by a New Zealand player in ODI history, with a total of four.

This is not the first time Mitchell has reached the top of the ODI rankings. He previously held the No. 1 position for a brief period last November, only to be overtaken by Rohit Sharma shortly thereafter. However, his current form suggests that he may hold onto this ranking for a longer duration. The decisive match in Indore showcased his skills, particularly in partnership with Glenn Phillips, as they combined for a remarkable 219-run stand, marking the second-highest ODI partnership for New Zealand.

Impact on Rankings

The recent matches have had a significant impact on the ODI batting rankings. Following his impressive performance, Afghanistan’s Ibrahim Zadran has climbed to third place with 764 points, surpassing former Indian captain Rohit Sharma, who has dropped to fourth with 757 points. Despite the shifts in rankings, both Mitchell and Kohli remain well ahead of the competition, solidifying their positions as the top two batsmen in ODI cricket.

Glenn Phillips also made notable strides in the rankings, moving up 16 places to 20th after scoring 106 runs off 88 balls in the decisive match. His contributions not only helped New Zealand secure the series but also improved his standing in the all-rounders’ list, where he climbed 14 spots to joint 31st. Meanwhile, Azmatullah Omarzai from Afghanistan continues to lead the ODI all-rounders’ rankings.

Bowling Rankings Update

In the bowling rankings, New Zealand’s Michael Bracewell has made a significant leap, moving up six places to 33rd following his performances in the first two matches of the series against India. However, there has been no change at the top of the ODI bowling rankings, where Afghanistan’s Rashid Khan maintains his position as the No. 1 bowler with 710 points. England’s Jofra Archer follows closely in second place with 670 points.

Rashid Khan’s success extends beyond ODIs, as he has also made progress in the T20I rankings, climbing two spots to second among bowlers after taking two wickets in Afghanistan’s opening match against the West Indies in Dubai. His teammate Mujeeb Ur Rahman has also advanced, moving up two spots to joint 14th in the T20I bowling rankings. Additionally, Ibrahim Zadran has improved his standing in the T20I batting rankings, climbing five places to reach 15th.
