DAE and ROSATOM Discuss Enhanced Nuclear Cooperation

The Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) is actively engaging in discussions with ROSATOM to bolster collaboration in nuclear energy. This partnership focuses on both large capacity Nuclear Power Plants and Small Modular Reactors (SMRs). While talks are ongoing, no specific agreements have been finalized as of now.

Safety remains the top priority at every phase of nuclear power plant development. Facilities are established in strict accordance with the guidelines set by the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB). To ensure transparency and community involvement, formal stakeholder consultations are carried out during public hearings linked to the Social Impact Assessment as mandated by the RFCTLARR Act. Environmental clearances from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) are also obtained through these assessments. Furthermore, a comprehensive public awareness initiative aims to engage various stakeholders effectively. All safety and environmental recommendations from different regulatory agencies are thoroughly enforced throughout the project lifecycle.

Supporting Local Communities

In a commitment to community upliftment, the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL), a public sector undertaking under DAE, offers special provisions that relax age and marks criteria for Project Affected Persons. The recruitment process also gives preference to local youth, ensuring they benefit from the ongoing projects. NPCIL’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programs include skill development initiatives, scholarships, and sponsorships for higher education aimed at talented students from the surrounding areas.

The government is dedicated to fostering growth around new project sites, as well as existing operational locations. NPCIL has implemented various social welfare schemes, particularly in education, healthcare, infrastructure development, and sanitation. These efforts aim to enhance the quality of life for local communities, promoting inclusive growth.
