Considering the iPhone 17? Its Resale Value May Be Minimal

If you’re considering purchasing an iPhone Air, you might want to think twice, especially if you plan to resell it in the near future. A recent report from SellCell reveals that the iPhone Air has experienced significant depreciation, losing between 40.3% and 47.7% of its value based on storage variants. This decline in resale value is notably worse than other models in the iPhone 17 series, raising concerns for potential sellers.

Resale Value of iPhone 17 Series Models

According to SellCell, the iPhone 17 Pro Max 256GB model has the lowest depreciation rate at just 26.1% over a 10-week period. Following closely are the iPhone 17 Pro Max 512GB, which depreciates by 30.3%, and the iPhone 17 Pro 256GB at 31.9%. In stark contrast, the iPhone Air 256GB sees a depreciation of 40.3%, significantly higher than both the base iPhone 17 Pro and the iPhone 17 Pro Max. The iPhone Air 1TB variant faces the steepest decline, losing 47.7% of its value. This data highlights the varying resale values across the iPhone 17 series, indicating that not all models hold their worth equally.

Market Research Insights

To further understand the resale market for the iPhone Air, independent research was conducted across various offline dealers, particularly in Jaipur. The findings revealed that the iPhone Air is being sold for considerably less than the iPhone 17 Pro. For instance, one popular dealer listed the iPhone Air at approximately ₹90,000 in “open-box condition,” which represents a 25% drop from its original retail price in India. In comparison, the base model of the iPhone 17 Pro is available for around ₹1,20,000, reflecting an 11% decrease from its MRP of ₹1,35,000. These figures illustrate a significant disparity in resale values between the two models, suggesting that the iPhone Air is not as desirable in the second-hand market.

Implications for Future iPhone Air Models

The declining demand for the iPhone Air has raised concerns about its future. Earlier this year, The Information reported that Apple might delay the launch of the next-generation iPhone Air due to disappointing sales of the current model. This could lead to a revision of Apple’s launch strategy, with the next iPhone Air expected to debut alongside the iPhone 18 Pro models in September 2026. The current trends in resale value and market demand may influence Apple’s decisions moving forward, as they seek to enhance the appeal of their Air series in a competitive smartphone landscape.
