Concerns Mount for CSK as MS Dhoni’s Fitness Status Remains Uncertain Ahead of IPL 2026

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are grappling with uncertainty regarding the availability of their legendary former captain, MS Dhoni, as the IPL 2026 season progresses. Currently undergoing rehabilitation for a calf muscle strain, Dhoni is not expected to be fit for CSK’s upcoming match against the Delhi Capitals on April 11. The 44-year-old wicketkeeper-batter may require at least another week to regain full fitness, raising concerns about his participation in the team’s next two games.

Dhoni’s Rehabilitation Progress

MS Dhoni has opted to remain in Chennai for his rehabilitation instead of traveling with the CSK squad for away matches in Guwahati and Bengaluru. His absence was notably felt during CSK’s recent home game against the Punjab Kings, further intensifying speculation about his fitness. Reports indicate that Dhoni is collaborating closely with CSK’s support staff, including a physiotherapist and masseur, as part of his recovery plan. He has begun light training, which includes batting practice at the nets, but he has yet to achieve match fitness. CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan commented on the situation, stating, “MS is undergoing rehab and it will take some time. We can’t say how much time,” highlighting the uncertainty surrounding Dhoni’s return timeline.

CSK’s Struggles Without Their Star Player

The absence of MS Dhoni has coincided with a challenging start for CSK, who have yet to secure a victory this season after three consecutive losses. This marks one of the worst openings in the franchise’s history, with their only worse start occurring in 2022 when they lost their first four matches. While CSK boasts a deep roster, the lack of their most experienced player has created a noticeable void, particularly in high-pressure situations. The team is set to face the Delhi Capitals and Kolkata Knight Riders at their home ground in Chepauk, but Dhoni’s likely absence raises questions about their ability to turn their fortunes around.

Contrasting Views on Dhoni’s Impact

Despite the concerns surrounding Dhoni’s fitness, some players believe that CSK can still perform well without him. Heinrich Klaasen, a batter for Sunrisers Hyderabad, expressed a different perspective, suggesting that Dhoni’s absence may not significantly weaken CSK’s on-field strength. He stated, “CSK has got an incredible IPL record. Even with Dhoni not being there, they are not much of a lesser side,” emphasizing that Dhoni’s influence is felt more in terms of leadership than his batting contributions. This viewpoint adds an interesting layer to the ongoing narrative as CSK navigates the challenges of the current season without their iconic captain.
