INS Ikshak, the latest addition to the Indian Navy’s fleet, was officially commissioned during a ceremony held at the Naval Base in Kochi on November 6, 2025. The national anthem played as the crew presented a ceremonial salute, and the ship’s commissioning pennant was raised, symbolizing its official entry into active service. The ceremony concluded with the unveiling of the Commissioning Plaque by the Chief of the Naval Staff, marking a historic moment for the Indian Navy.

Admiral Tripathi emphasized that INS Ikshak represents a successful collaboration between the Indian Navy, domestic industries, and micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). He described the vessel as a manifestation of the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative, which aims to promote self-reliance in defense manufacturing. Equipped with advanced hydrographic and oceanographic systems, INS Ikshak is designed for dual roles: it can operate as a survey vessel and serve as a platform for Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) operations, or function as a hospital ship when necessary. Notably, it is the first vessel of its kind to include dedicated accommodations for women, highlighting the Navy’s commitment to inclusivity and modernization.

The induction of INS Ikshak significantly enhances India’s hydrographic survey capabilities and indigenous shipbuilding capacity. The ship is expected to play a crucial role in ensuring maritime safety and reinforcing national security across vital sea lanes.
